Mt. Hayachine, rising to over 1,900 meters, begins to flame with color from late September, and that fire descends gradually to the gorges and then to the villages below. Matsukawa Gorge (Hachimantai City)

⚠️ Important for fiscal 2026: the section of the Hachimantai Jukai Line between below Toshichi Onsen and the Matsukawa Onsen gate is closed for the whole of fiscal 2026 after the road collapsed (announced by the Hachimantai Visitor Center on 1 April and 21 May 2026). You cannot drive south from the Hachimantai summit down the Jukai Line to Matsukawa Onsen and Matsukawa Gorge, so the popular plan of pairing the summit and the gorge in a single day does not work this year. Reach Matsukawa Onsen from the Matsuo-Hachimantai IC side instead, and check the current situation before you finalise your route (Iwate Civil Engineering Center 0195-62-2888 / Hachimantai City Tourism Association 0195-78-3500).

In the mountains of Hachimantai City in northern Iwate, Matsukawa Gorge is celebrated as one of the region's most spectacular autumn foliage sites. Its address is Matsuo Yoriki, Hachimantai City — not Hanamaki. The gorge, carved by the clear mountain stream, is lined with maple, beech, and oak trees that turn vivid shades of red and yellow in autumn — creating a scene of extraordinary natural beauty.

The walking trail along the gorge allows visitors to experience the autumn colors up close, with the sound of rushing water as a constant companion. The contrast between the vivid foliage and the crystal-clear turquoise water is particularly stunning.

Access: About 30 minutes by car from Hachimantai City. Best viewing period: Early to late October (Mori no Ohashi bridge: mid- to late October).

Hayachine-san (Mt. Hayachine) Area

Standing as the symbol of Iwate Prefecture, Mt. Hayachine (1,917 m) is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site for its associated festival traditions. In early autumn, the alpine vegetation on the upper slopes turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold — and the view from the summit across the Iwate landscape is breathtaking.

Even for those who don't climb to the summit, the foothill areas around Hanamaki City and the approach routes offer beautiful autumn scenery as the colors gradually descend through the forests.

Access: About 1 hour by car from JR Hanamaki Station. Best viewing period (summit): Late September to early October. Lower forest areas: mid to late October.

Koiwai Farm (Shizukuishi Town, Iwate City)

Koiwai Farm — one of Japan's largest privately owned farms, established in 1891 — becomes a breathtaking autumn landscape as the vast fields and forests change color in October and November. The wide open skies, the sweeping pastures, and the backdrop of autumnal mountains create a scene with a unique, almost European quality rarely found in Japanese landscapes.

The sight of the farm's famous cattle grazing in golden autumn light, with Mt. Iwate visible in the distance, is deeply moving. The farm also produces excellent dairy products, including soft serve ice cream and cheeses, making it a great place to combine autumn sightseeing with delicious local food.

Access: About 30 minutes by car from JR Morioka Station. Best viewing period: Mid-October to early November.

Genbikei Gorge (Ichinoseki City)

In southern Iwate, Genbikei Gorge is a dramatic natural attraction where the Iwai River has carved deep into volcanic rock to create a stunning series of cliffs, rapids, and pools. In autumn, the surrounding forests turn vivid red and orange, and the combination of blazing foliage and churning water creates scenes of exceptional beauty.

The gorge is famous for a beloved local tradition — the "flying dango" (kago no watashi) — where freshly made mochi dumplings (dango) are delivered to visitors in baskets suspended on a rope across the gorge. Hiraizumi in Autumn

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hiraizumi — home to Chusonji Temple's Golden Hall (Konjikido) and Motsuji Temple's Pure Land Garden — adds a profound historical dimension to Iwate's autumn landscape. The autumn foliage surrounding these ancient sites, which date back to the Heian period (794–1185), creates a deeply moving atmosphere where history and nature are inseparable.

The garden of Motsuji Temple, with its central pond reflecting the autumn colors, is particularly beautiful, and the sight of fallen leaves carpeting the garden's moss-covered ground adds another layer of melancholy beauty.

Access: About 10 minutes on foot from JR Hiraizumi Station. Best viewing period: Late October to mid-November.

Visitor Checklist

• Estimated time: Half a day to stroll one gorge; allow one to three nights to tour all three, so you can follow the foliage front from mountain to village at ease.
• What to bring / prepare: Gorge trails are slippery with wet leaves, so wear shoes with grip; climbing Mt. Hayachine requires mountain boots, rain gear, warm clothing, water, and trail food, with warm clothing for when the sun dips.
• Checking peak and services: Coloring varies by year. Check the latest coloring via each tourism association and social media, and confirm private-car restrictions and shuttle buses for Mt. Hayachine in advance.
• Suggested route: Where officials have published a peak, it is Matsukawa Gorge from early to late October (Mori no Ohashi bridge mid- to late October) and Genbikei from mid-October to early November. No official peak has been published for Mt. Hayachine, so we no longer quote one. Note also that these three sites are far apart — Matsukawa Gorge is in Hachimantai City on the Morioka side, Mt. Hayachine on the Hanamaki and Tono side, and Genbikei at Ichinoseki — so allow generous travel time.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

The following is a summary — based solely on information published on the official websites of Iwate Prefecture, the Iwate Tourism Association "Iwate no Tabi," the Hachimantai City Tourism Association, the Hachimantai Visitor Centre, the Hanamaki Tourism Association, the Tono City official website, the Ichinoseki City official tourism site "Ichi-tabi," and Chusonji Temple — as of September 2026.

[CRITICAL] Hachimantai Jukai Line: The Matsukawa Onsen Side Is Closed in 2026

As announced by the Hachimantai Visitor Centre on 1 April and 21 May 2026, the section of the Hachimantai Jukai Line between Fujishichi Onsen and the Matsukawa Onsen gate is closed in 2026 due to a road collapse.

This means the route descending south from the Hachimantai summit along the Jukai Line to Matsukawa Onsen and Matsukawa Gorge cannot be used. The standard combination of visiting the summit and Matsukawa Gorge in a single day is not possible this year. Please confirm this before building your itinerary (Iwate Civil Engineering Centre: 0195-62-2888 / Hachimantai City Tourism Association: 0195-78-3500).

Note that some aggregator sites and tourism pages have not incorporated this road collapse information.

Hachimantai Aspite Line and Jukai Line Road Closures (Approximate Timing)

The schedule for night-time closures and winter road closures on these routes in autumn 2026 has not yet been announced as of September 2026. For reference, the record from the previous year (autumn 2025) was as follows.

The most important point to note is that night-time access is already cut off from mid-October, when the foliage is at its best. Anyone aiming to see Hachimantai at dusk must check that year's notice. For the 2026 schedule, contact the Iwate Civil Engineering Centre (0195-62-2888).

Hachimantai Summit Rest House

Once the night-time closure period begins, closing time moves forward to 16:30. Visitors planning a late-afternoon stop during the foliage period should bear this in mind.

Hayachine-san Car Parks

There is no car park at the Odakoshi trailhead. You will need to walk or drive from one of the options below (all free of charge).

Kawaranobori Car Park may be full by around 9:00 a.m., according to the Iwate Prefecture official website. Also, the Kawaranobori General Rest Facility is closed to public access from 15 June to late October of this year (Reiwa 8 (2026)) for roof leak repair work (the toilets at the adjacent Kawaranobori Car Park remain usable and there is no impact on the number of parking spaces). This overlaps entirely with the foliage season, so please do not plan around using the rest facility.

Genbi Valley: Kakko Dango Dumplings

Kakku-ya, known for its "flying dumplings," has been in business since 1907 (Meiji 40). The following is what appears on the Ichinoseki City official tourism site "Ichi-tabi."

The time "9:00–14:30" appears frequently online, but the Ichinoseki City official source gives 9:30 to around 15:00. As the shop closes when sold out and takes irregular rest days, please confirm in advance if you are making a special trip for this.

Access to Genbi Valley: approx. 8 minutes by car from Ichinoseki IC; approx. 20 minutes by car from JR Ichinoseki Station. Car parks include the city municipal car park and others around Michi-no-Eki Genbi Valley, but the number of spaces and charges are not stated in official information (Ichinoseki City Tourism Association: 0191-23-2350).

Chusonji Temple (Hiraizumi Town)

Admission details from the official website of Chusonji, which many visitors combine with viewing the foliage in Hiraizumi.

The special statue viewing ticket alone does not grant access to Konjikido or Sankozo. Groups of 30 or more receive a 10% discount; holders of a disability certificate pay half price. Note that visiting hours shift forward to 16:30 from 4 November, so visitors going in the latter part of the foliage season should allow extra time. The 2026 special statue viewing event has a dedicated page linked from the official homepage, but the specific dates of the event could not be confirmed from that page.

Geibikei Gorge Boat Ride

The last departure time is brought forward incrementally through autumn.
