Tonogo Hachimangu

In Tono City, known as a homeland of folktales, stands Tonogo Hachimangu. It is said to have begun in 1189 when Asonuma Hirotsuna, who received the Tono region from Minamoto no Yoritomo, enshrined the Hachiman deity as the guardian of the area. In a land where the world of the Tono Monogatari still lingers strongly, this is an ancient shrine that conveys a sense of deep history.

It is also known as the only shrine in Iwate to receive a branch spirit from Izumo Taisha, making it popular as a matchmaking power spot. A vast riding ground and an unusual cat shrine visited by cat lovers are among the sights found nowhere else, offering a leisurely walk through the grounds.

Highlights

- A matchmaking shrine enshrining a branch spirit of Izumo Taisha, drawing those who wish for good relationships - Horseback archery rites held on the broad riding ground, with valiant displays in autumn - The cat shrine in the grounds, a rare hall where people pray for the health and memory of beloved cats - Blessings also known for career luck, business prosperity, and family safety

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the trees bud and soft green spreads across the wide riding ground. In summer deep green surrounds the site as quiet Tono breezes pass pleasantly through. Autumn brings colored leaves along with the horseback archery rites, the liveliest season. In winter, snow covers the grounds and reveals a dreamlike scene worthy of the Tono legends.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Shiraiwa, Matsuzakicho, Tono City, Iwate Prefecture - Access: About 10 minutes by car from JR Tono Station, and rental cycles are a popular way to visit - Free to visit, no admission fee - Parking is available, so it pairs well with other Tono spots

A Quick Tip

Tono is a land of folktales. Using the shrine as a base, visit nearby legend spots such as Unedori-sama and Tsuzukiishi for a full day of enjoyment. The cat shrine is a popular photo spot, but remember it is a sacred place and pray quietly.
