Kasaneiwa: A Giant Boulder Power Spot at Ose Ishizuchi Shrine on Shodoshima
Kasaneiwa
At the western tip of Shodoshima in Kagawa, in the town of Tonosho, stands the sacred body of Ose Ishizuchi Shrine, a boulder called Kasaneiwa. On the edge of a sheer cliff, a great stone that looks like stacked rice cakes sits heavily, as if it might roll off at any moment yet never does. Whether someone placed it deliberately or it simply remained as the surrounding rock weathered away is a mystery that even local people cannot answer. Ose Ishizuchi Shrine belongs to the lineage of Mount Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan, and this area was once a quarry where stone was cut for the building of Osaka Castle.
Highlights
- The sacred boulder Kasaneiwa, stacked on the cliff top, with its overwhelming presence - The panorama of the Seto Inland Sea and sky seen from beside the stone - The historic quarry site at Ose, where stone was cut for the construction of Osaka Castle - The steep stone steps leading up to the rock, and the sense of openness when you reach the top
Enjoying the Seasons
From spring through autumn the sea and sky shine brightly, making the view from the rock even more striking. In summer the sun glitters on the surface of the Seto Inland Sea, filling the scene with vitality. Autumn brings clear air, the best season to see distant island shapes in sharp detail. Winter is quiet, with few visitors and a chance to face the great stone in peace.
