Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter One Day Stroll

White walled storehouses and willow trees reflect on the canal in this retro and beautiful townscape. This route covers, in one relaxed day of walking, an area that still bears traces of its Edo period prosperity as a territory directly governed by the shogunate.

Course Route

9:30 Start at the Kurashiki Bikan district Begin along the Kurashiki River, walking past Edo period merchant houses and rows of white walled storehouses. Mornings are quiet, so you can enjoy the peaceful waterside scenery.

10:30 Ohara Museum of Art The first private museum of Western art in Japan, opened in 1930. Admire masterpieces by El Greco and Monet while immersing yourself in art at leisure. The temple like exterior of the main building is a sight in itself.

12:00 Lunch at a townhouse cafe Enjoy a lunch made with local ingredients at a cafe housed in an old building. Kurashiki is also known as a denim producing area, so browsing craft shops is another pleasure.

13:30 Take a canal boat ride Glide gently along the Kurashiki River with a boatman as your guide. The view of the town from the water is exceptional. The ride takes about twenty minutes for a leisurely journey.

15:00 Ivy Square A former red brick spinning mill turned into a sightseeing complex. Inside the ivy covered building are a hotel, restaurants, and shops. Close the day with a stroll and some shopping.

Highlights

The main attraction is the scene of willow trees and white plaster storehouses along the Kurashiki River. In the evening the stone paved streets glow with soft light, giving a mood quite different from daytime.

Access and Tips

About fifteen minutes on foot south from JR Kurashiki Station. The district is small enough to explore entirely on foot. To avoid crowds, weekday mornings are recommended.

A Quick Tip

Step one street off the main path and you will find quiet lanes and hidden craft shops. Wandering freely without sticking to a map is the best way to enjoy the Bikan district.

Practical Travel Notes

• The Bikan district is about fifteen minutes on foot south from JR Kurashiki Station. It is small enough to explore on foot, and since the stone paved streets continue throughout, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
• The Ohara Museum of Art, opened in 1930, was the first private Western art museum in Japan. Admission is 2,000 yen for general visitors and 500 yen for high school, junior high, and elementary students, with preschoolers free. It is open 9:00 to 17:00 (March to November, last entry 16:30) and closed on Mondays as a rule (open when Monday is a holiday, and open throughout August).
• The Kurashiki River boat ride is boarded by buying a ticket at the landing, and it may be suspended depending on weather and operating conditions. It is popular, so there may be a wait.
• Kurashiki Ivy Square is a complex facility created from a red brick former spinning mill, housing a hotel, restaurants, and shops, and is free to stroll around.
• The Bikan district is beautiful when illuminated from evening onward, taking on a dreamlike atmosphere different from daytime. If you have time to spare, staying until dusk is recommended.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Fares (Kurashiki River Boat Ride): 700 yen for adults, 350 yen for children (age 5 to elementary school age), free for children under 5. It has been announced that from boarding on October 1, 2026 (Reiwa 8) the fares will be revised to 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children
• Operating hours (Kurashiki River Boat Ride): The first boat is at 9:30 and the last departure is at 17:00, with boats leaving every 30 minutes. From July 1 to September 30 the last boat is at 15:00
• Closed days (Kurashiki River Boat Ride): From March to December it is closed on the second Monday (except public holidays); from January to February it operates only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; and it does not run over the New Year period. Boarding tickets are sold only on the day at the Kurashiki-kan Tourist Information Centre
• Kurashiki-kan Tourist Information Centre: 9:00-18:00, closed on December 31 and January 1. Wheelchair and pushchair rental and coin lockers are available from 9:00 to 17:00 (same-day use only), and there are also accessible toilets and Wi-Fi
• Ohara Museum of Art in winter: From December to February it opens 9:00-15:00 (last entry 14:30), closing earlier than usual. There is no dedicated car park, and visitors are directed to use car parks in the neighbourhood
