Futenmagu

In the central part of the main island of Okinawa, in Ginowan City, Futenmagu is counted among the eight shrines of the Ryukyu and is the only shrine in Ginowan City. Its greatest feature is the mystical limestone cave inner shrine, about 280 meters long, spreading deep behind the halls. Animal fossils from about 20,000 years ago have been excavated from this cave, and in 1991 it was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. Since ancient times the cave has been revered as a sacred site, and walking through it wraps you in a holy air. Its deities are the Kumano gods and the gods of the Ryukyu ancient faith, and it is known for wide-ranging blessings such as matchmaking, protection from misfortune, safe childbirth, and the granting of wishes, a leading power spot of Okinawa.

Highlights

  • Mystical Inner Shrine (Limestone Cave): The cave about 280 meters long spreading behind the halls is a natural sanctuary born over a long span of time, filled with a divine air.
  • Faith in Matchmaking: Cherished by worshippers praying for love and good relationships, with popular amulets and votive plaques.
  • Dignity of the Eight Ryukyu Shrines: The historic halls, where the Kumano gods are said to have been enshrined together in the 15th century, convey the faith culture unique to Okinawa to this day.
  • The Special Feel of Cave Worship: The experience of worshipping while walking through a cave is hard to find elsewhere.

Enjoying the Seasons

In Okinawa, warm year-round, the appeal is that it is easy to worship whenever you visit. The cave stays cool throughout the year, comfortable to tour even on a hot summer day. The New Year bustles with first-visit worshippers, but you can usually worship in calm. Cave viewing has set reception hours, so checking the time before your visit is reassuring.

Access and Basic Information

  • Location: 1-27-10 Futenma, Ginowan City, Okinawa
  • Access: About 40 minutes by car from Naha Airport (central Okinawa)
  • Worship Hours: Grounds open all day
  • Cave Viewing: 10:00 to 17:00 (by reception; may be suspended during the New Year period or for shrine duties)
  • Admission: Free (cave viewing also free, reception required)

Practical Travel Notes

  • Flow of Cave Viewing: The inner shrine cave cannot be entered freely; reception at the shrine office is required. As hours are limited, an early time such as the morning is recommended if you also want to see the cave.
  • Watch Your Footing: The cave has damp, slippery spots, so wear comfortable shoes.
  • Worship Manners: It is an active place of prayer. Stay quiet inside the cave and follow on-site guidance on whether photography is allowed.
  • Nearby: Its location fits easily into a central Okinawa sightseeing route, an easy stop on a drive linking Naha and the north.

A Quick Tip

The inner shrine cave requires reception for viewing and has limited hours, so if you also want to see the cave, an earlier time is recommended. The cave floor is slippery, so wear comfortable shoes. As it is a sacred place, worship quietly inside the cave. Its location is easy to drop by between sightseeing in central Okinawa.

๐Ÿ“š Sources

This article draws on the history and shrine-office guidance of Futenma-gu, tourism information from Ginowan City and Okinawa Prefecture, and materials on the scenic-beauty designation of the inner sanctuary limestone cave. Statements about it being one of the eight shrines of Ryukyu and about the roughly 280-meter inner cave being designated a Place of Scenic Beauty in 1991 rest on such histories and public materials. Because cave-viewing reception hours and visiting hours may change, please confirm current details with the official information of Futenma-gu or Ginowan City before visiting.

Visitor Checklist

  • Estimated time: About forty minutes to one hour combining a visit to the main hall and viewing the inner-sanctuary limestone cave.
  • What to bring: Wear comfortable shoes as parts of the cave are damp and slippery.
  • Getting around: Located in central Okinawa about forty minutes by car from Naha Airport, it is easy to drop by on a drive linking Naha and the north.
  • Viewing hours: The inner cave requires reception at the shrine office and hours are limited, so if you also want to see the cave, an early time such as the morning is recommended.
  • Etiquette: As an active place of prayer, stay quiet inside the cave and follow on-site guidance on whether photography is allowed.
