Awashima Jinja: The Shrine of Doll Memorials and Womens Wishes in Kada, Wakayama
Awashima Jinja
Awashima Jinja in Kada, Wakayama City, is the head shrine of the many Awashima shrines across Japan. One of its enshrined deities, Sukunahikona no Mikoto, is regarded as a god of medicine and has long been worshipped especially as a protector of womens health. The grounds are packed with dolls and stuffed toys, said to number some twenty thousand, dedicated from all over the country, giving the shrine a unique atmosphere. Set in a small seaside town, it is a curious, lesser-known spot with quiet charm.
Highlights
- The sight of countless Japanese dolls and stuffed toys filling shelves and eaves - Worship for good relationships and health, with a deity of medicine and a guardian of women - Grounds overlooking the sea of Kada, where the sea breeze feels pleasant - The doll-floating rite held each year on March 3, sending dolls out to sea on small wooden boats
Enjoying the Seasons
Around the Doll Festival the shrine grows livelier with its rites, and in spring you can enjoy a visit alongside the calm Kada sea. In summer the blue sea and sky shine, and from autumn into winter you can quietly offer prayers in clear air. The seafood landed at nearby Kada Port is one more pleasure of the trip.
