Niutsuhime Jinja: A World Heritage Hidden Power Spot in the Amano Basin of Wakayama

🌊 Wakayama|June 23, 2026

Niutsuhime Jinja

Niutsuhime Jinja sits in the Amano Basin northwest of Mount Koya, in Katsuragi Town, Wakayama. Said to have been founded more than 1,700 years ago, it has long been revered as a shrine whose deity wards off all misfortune, and it is also known as the shrine of the deity who granted the land of Mount Koya to Kobo Daishi Kukai. Although it is registered as a World Heritage site together with Mount Koya as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, relatively few people visit, making it a quiet, lesser-known power spot.

Highlights

- The vermilion tower gate and the dignified main hall, with four sanctuaries arranged side by side - The beautifully curved arched bridge - The solemn atmosphere of grounds that tell of deep ties with Mount Koya - The faith of visitors who come seeking blessings for fortune, protection from misfortune, and good luck

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring, gentle cherry blossoms color the grounds; in early summer, the fresh green of the surrounding farmland is soothing; and in autumn, the whole basin turns to brilliant foliage. In the clear winter air, the vermilion of the halls stands out even more vividly. Thanks to the high elevation, the changing rural scenery is a delight in every season.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Kamiamano, Katsuragi Town, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture - Access: Connect by bus or car to Amano from stations such as Hashimoto - Easy to stop by when traveling by car toward Mount Koya - Daytime visits are recommended; drive with care as the area is mountainous

A Quick Tip

This quiet sacred site is well worth a short detour on the way to or from Mount Koya. Take your time and offer a prayer in an atmosphere far calmer than the bustling main temple complex.
