Nagoya Castle and Nagoya Gourmet One Day Course

This is a perfect history and gourmet course for first time visitors to Nagoya. You explore Nagoya Castle, the symbol of the city, then taste famous local dishes at Kinshachi Yokocho right beside the castle. The walking distance is gentle, so families and groups of friends can enjoy it easily. Allow about six to seven hours.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Nagoya Castle Enter through the main gate and look up at the grand keep crowned with golden Kinshachi ornaments. Admission is 500 yen for adults and free for junior high age and younger (rising to 1,000 yen for individual adults from 1 October 2026). The castle usually opens from nine to sixteen thirty, with entry to Honmaru Goten palace until sixteen. Do not miss the gorgeous painted screens of the palace.

10:30 Stroll Meijo Park Just outside the castle, walk leisurely through the greenery of Meijo Park and rest while enjoying the seasonal scenery. Strolling the park is free.

12:00 Lunch at Kinshachi Yokocho Head to Kinshachi Yokocho beside the castle. The yokocho itself is free to enter, and in the traditional Japanese streetscape of the Yoshinao zone you can enjoy Nagoya specialty hitsumabushi.

13:30 Snacking and souvenir hunting Sample a little of each Nagoya specialty such as miso katsu, miso nikomi udon, and Nagoya Cochin chicken dishes as you wander.

15:00 A casual wander nearby Walk the streets below the castle and pick out local souvenirs like wagashi sweets and uiro to close the day.

Practical Travel Notes

• Recommended timing: Entering Nagoya Castle right after opening to explore the Honmaru Goten palace and keep, then lunch at Kinshachi Yokocho at midday, makes for an easy flow. Paid areas close in the late afternoon, so finish sightseeing between morning and midday.
• Avoiding crowds: Cherry blossom and fresh green seasons and long holidays make the castle especially busy. Popular hitsumabushi shops at Kinshachi Yokocho tend to form lines around noon, so entering early in the eleven oclock hour is the sweet spot.
• Time guide: Allow about one and a half to two hours for the castle including the palace, and one and a half to two hours for eating and snacking at Kinshachi Yokocho for a comfortable pace.
• Nearby stops: You can rest in Meijo Park, and the Nagoya Noh Theater sits near the castle. Extending one subway stop to the Sakae area brings sights such as the TV tower and Oasis 21.
• Budget sense: Nagoya Castle admission is 500 yen for adults and free for junior high age and younger (rising to 1,000 yen for individual adults from 1 October 2026). Kinshachi Yokocho is free to enter, and while hitsumabushi lunches vary by shop, snacks can be enjoyed from a few hundred yen.
