♨️ Gunma|June 23, 2026

Tanashita Fudo Falls

Located in the Tanashita area of Akagi in Shibukawa, Gunma, Tanashita Fudo Falls plunges about 37 meters down a cliff formed by lava that flowed from an eruption of Mount Akagi. Its beauty earned it a place among Japans finest hundred waterfalls. Because the cliff behind the falls has collapsed into a cave-like hollow, you can view the cascade up close from behind, which is why it is also called a falls seen from the back. The walk along the path from the parking area also lets you savor a deep-mountain mood.

Highlights

- A powerful flow dropping about 37 meters in a single plunge - The rare sight of viewing the falls from behind - Dynamic cliffs created by lava from Mount Akagi - A scenic deep-mountain path leading from the parking area to the falls

Enjoying the Seasons

In the fresh green season the area is wrapped in vivid foliage, and in autumn the surrounding trees turn color for a splendid contrast with the falls. After rain the volume of water increases and the scene grows more impressive. Watch for ice in winter, so a visit from spring through autumn is recommended.
