Shizu Jinja Shrine

Located in Naka City, Ibaraki, Shizu Jinja is a venerable old shrine that has drawn the faith of people for centuries as the second-ranked shrine of the old Hitachi Province. According to shrine tradition it was founded in 806, and it was recorded in the Heian-era register of deities as a top-ranked Myojin Taisha. It was deeply revered by the Mito domain and served as a place of prayer for the Tokugawa family.

The enshrined deity is Takehazuchi no Mikoto, a god of weaving. Rarely crowded with tourists, this is a true hidden power spot where you can pray slowly in a calm setting.

Highlights

- A serene precinct wrapped in a deep grove. Simply walking the dappled approach calms the heart - The shrine treasure linked to Lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni, a bronze seal found at the root of a cypress beside the main hall, designated an Important Cultural Property - As a shrine of the weaving deity, it is also popular with visitors who pray for skill in handcrafts and the arts

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring, fresh greenery colors the grounds and the air feels crisp and clean. In autumn the trees turn, offering a quiet stroll among the foliage. During the New Year visit, the Setsubun festival, and the autumn grand festival, local worshippers fill the shrine with a lively atmosphere unlike its usual calm.
