Haishiwa Shrine, an Ancient Sanctuary of Ichinoseki Linked to Yamato Takeru

Haishiwa Shrine

In Yamame, Ichinoseki City, Haishiwa Shrine is a little known yet high ranking ancient shrine. According to tradition, its founding dates to when the hero Yamato Takeru, during a campaign against the Emishi, enshrined three deities, Takamimusubi, Ninigi, and Konohanasakuyahime, and prayed for victory. It is a shrine with deep history reaching back to the age of myth.

Its rank is high, and according to the official chronicle of Emperor Montoku it was granted a court rank in the year 852, and it is known as a shrine listed in the register of deities compiled in 927. Though modest in fame as a tourist site, it is a hidden sacred place of Ichinoseki holding long history and lineage.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the trees along the approach bud and soft greenery spreads through the old shrine. In summer deep green surrounds the site, and cool air drifts through the secluded grounds. Autumn leaves enhance the dignity of the hall, allowing a calm visit. In winter, snow dresses the grounds and reveals a dignified holiness befitting a shrine of ancient rank.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Tate, Yamame, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture - Access: About 10 minutes by car from JR Ichinoseki Station, with good access from the Ichinoseki interchange of the Tohoku Expressway - Free to visit, no admission fee - Parking is available, and it pairs well with a stroll through Ichinoseki

A Quick Tip

Though modest in fame, it is a precious ancient shrine where you can feel a lineage continuing from the age of myth. It suits a visit before a new challenge or a contest. Ichinoseki has many scenic spots such as Genbikei and Geibikei gorges, so stopping by alongside nature sightseeing makes for a fulfilling trip.
