Haishiwa Shrine

In Yamame, Ichinoseki City, Haishiwa Shrine is a little known yet high ranking ancient shrine. It sits on the mid slope of Mount Ranbai, on high ground looking down over central Ichinoseki. According to tradition, its founding dates to when the hero Yamato Takeru, during a campaign against the Emishi, enshrined three deities, Takamimusubi, Ninigi, and Konohanasakuyahime, and prayed for victory. It is a shrine with deep history reaching back to the age of myth.

Its rank is high. According to the official chronicle of Emperor Montoku it was granted a court rank in the year 852, and it is known as a shrine listed in the register of deities compiled in 927. The enshrined deities are the three, Takamimusubi, Ninigi, and Konohanasakuyahime. Though modest in fame as a tourist site, it is a hidden sacred place of Ichinoseki holding long history and lineage.
