Hiraizumi World Heritage Course Chusonji and Motsuji

Hiraizumi once reached the height of splendor under the Oshu Fujiwara clan. A golden Buddhist culture and gardens said to recreate paradise on earth still remain here in quiet grace. This relaxed course through the World Heritage sites is perfect even for first-time visitors.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Hiraizumi Station Pick up a map at the station first. A loop bus is handy, but if the weather is fine, exploring on foot is a lovely option.

9:30 Arrive at Chusonji Climb the cedar-lined approach known as Tsukimizaka. Sunlight filters gently through the trees, and several halls dot the path along the way.

10:00 Visit the Konjikido Sheltered within a protective hall, the Konjikido is breathtaking, covered entirely in gold leaf. It is the greatest highlight of Chusonji and speaks of the Fujiwara clan glory.

12:00 Lunch Enjoy wanko soba or local regional dishes at a shop near the temple gate.

13:30 Move to Motsuji Motsuji is within walking distance of Chusonji. Head over while enjoying the peaceful town streets.

14:00 Stroll the Motsuji paradise garden Centered on a large pond, this garden is said to represent paradise on earth. Take a slow lap and admire the scenery reflected on the water.

16:00 Return to Hiraizumi Station If time allows, stop by the Muryokoin ruins to round off the day.

Highlights

The single greatest highlight is the Konjikido at Chusonji. The sight of the entire hall glowing gold has a power that photographs cannot capture. The paradise garden at Motsuji, by contrast, is all about serenity. Gazing at the pond and garden as they shift with the seasons, you may lose track of time entirely.

Access and Tips

Transfer to a local line at Ichinoseki Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen and get off at Hiraizumi Station. A loop bus runs through the town, but the main sights are within walking distance of one another. The approach to Chusonji is a steady slope, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea.

A Quick Tip

The best time to see the Konjikido is early in the morning when the hall is less crowded, letting you take in the sight at your own pace. The autumn foliage season is especially beautiful, making a fall visit truly special.
