Quietly set in Kokusekicho, Mizusawa, Oshu City, Kokuseki-ji is an ancient Tendai temple regarded as one of the oldest in Tohoku. According to temple tradition, it was founded in 729 by the monk Gyoki and is considered one of the first temples in the Tohoku region. It is a sacred place known mainly to those in the know, carrying nearly 1300 years of history.
What has made this temple famous nationwide is the Kokuseki-ji Somin Festival held in the depths of winter. It is a vigorous festival in which men drive away misfortune and pray for health, and it is designated as a Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
