Arahira Tenjin

Arahira Tenjin, whose formal name is Sugawara Shrine, sits on a small rocky islet known as Tenjin Island that juts into Kinko Bay in Kanoya City, Kagoshima. Said to have been founded in the Tenbun era between 1532 and 1555, it enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. The contrast of the clear sea, the red gate and the white sand is beautiful, and at the high tide of the spring tides the sandbar of the approach sinks beneath the water, making the shrine appear to float on the sea, a fantastical and scenic power spot.

In summer the contrast of the clear blue sea and the white sand is at its most vivid. From autumn into winter the air clears and you can see all the way to the mountains on the far shore. At dawn and dusk the color of the sea changes with the angle of the light, a photogenic time of day. The way the scenery shifts with the tides is also part of the charm, and even on the same day the shrine shows a completely different face depending on when you visit.

• At the high tide of the spring tides the sandbar sinks and the approach cannot be crossed. It can take about an hour before it becomes crossable again

Practical Travel Notes

• The trick is to choose your visiting time by purpose. Aim for high tide to photograph the shrine floating on the sea, and for low tide if you want to cross to the hall of worship on the rock. Check a tide table in advance for the high and low tide times.
• Allow roughly 30 minutes to an hour on site, including photos and worship.
• The stairway on the rock is steep and climbed with the help of a rope, so easy walking shoes are recommended.
• The area lies along the coast of the Osumi Peninsula. Combining the visit with a drive that offers views of Sakurajima and Mount Kaimon across Kinko Bay makes for a fuller day.
• Both admission and parking are free, so costs are minimal.
