Tsukiyomi Shrine, a Power Spot for Matchmaking and Views Standing Beyond the Eruption on Sakurajima
Tsukiyomi Shrine
Tsukiyomi Shrine sits just beside Sakurajima Port, the gateway to Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima. An old shrine said to date from the Wado era between 708 and 715, it was buried by lava along with the surrounding village in the Taisho eruption of 1914, and was later rebuilt atop that lava. Known for a wide range of blessings such as matchmaking, safe childbirth and traffic safety, it is the first place you can stop after crossing to Sakurajima by ferry, a lesser-known power spot where you feel the history of walking alongside an active volcano.
