Asami Hachiman Shrine, Guardian of Beppu Hot Springs and a Hidden Power Spot for Fortune and Love
Asami Hachiman Shrine
Beppu boasts the largest volume of hot-spring water in Japan. Watching quietly over this town of rising steam from a hillside is Asami Hachiman Shrine. It is said to have been founded in 1196 when Otomo Yoshinao, who had become the governor of Bungo, invited the spirit of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura. It serves as the chief guardian shrine of Beppu hot springs.
Because it sits on a hill a little away from the tourist-filled center of Beppu, it is a hidden power spot where you can worship at a relaxed pace. Known for a wide range of blessings such as good fortune, business prosperity, matchmaking, and improved money luck, it has long stood close to the lives of local people.
Highlights
- The married cedars — Two sacred trees standing as if leaning together. A popular spot where people wishing for love or marital harmony offer their prayers. - The view from the hill — From the grounds you can look out over the streets of Beppu and Beppu Bay, worshipping with a refreshing feeling. - The enshrined hot-spring deity — After the war, the guardian deity of Beppu hot springs was enshrined here, so a faith unique to a hot-spring town lives on.
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring, cherry blossoms color the grounds and join the hot-spring town in a peaceful mood. In summer the contrast of blue sky and rising steam is beautiful, in autumn there are red leaves, and in winter the view of Beppu Bay grows all the clearer in the crisp air. At the Beppu Hatto Hot Spring Festival every April, this shrine takes center stage and the whole town comes alive.
