Steam rises from every corner of Beppu, a hot spring city that ranks first in Japan for both the number of springs and the volume of water. It is said to have around two thousand two hundred springs and a flow exceeding eighty thousand liters per minute, and many public bathhouses and inns dot the seaside town. Its greatest appeal is the wide variety of water types, letting you soak in several different springs in a single day.

Highlights

Beppu is home to eight distinct hot spring districts known as the Beppu Hatto, and Beppu, Hamawaki, Kankaiji, Hotta, Myoban, Kannawa, Shibaseki, and Kamegawa each have their own atmosphere and water quality. Near the old harbor stands the municipal Takegawara Onsen, known for its dignified hip and gable roof, where you can try a sand bath as well as the hot spring. Many public baths in town cost only a few hundred yen, and soaking shoulder to shoulder with locals becomes a treasured travel memory.

Enjoying the Seasons

In winter the steam rises thick and dense, creating a dreamlike scene. Spring brings cherry blossoms in nearby parks, while autumn offers mountain foliage to admire from the bath. Even in summer, the breeze after a soak feels wonderful in the mornings and evenings, making it worth a visit year round.

Access and Basic Information

Beppu Station on the JR Nippo Main Line is the gateway for sightseeing, with public baths and inns clustered nearby. You can reach it by highway bus or limited express train from the Fukuoka area, and an airport shuttle bus connects it with Oita Airport in about forty minutes. Local buses such as Kamenoi Bus and walking are handy for bath hopping.

Practical Travel Notes

Since each of the Beppu Hatto districts differs in water and atmosphere, combining two or three lets you enjoy their distinct characters. Many public baths do not provide towels or soap, so bring your own to be safe. To avoid crowds, bathing in the early morning or evening outside the main sightseeing hours is recommended. Touring the town center public baths alone takes about half a day, while including the hillside districts of Kannawa and Myoban warrants a full day for comfort. Budget wise, public baths run a few hundred yen and day use bathing at inns is in the low thousands, with experiential baths such as the Takegawara sand bath scattered about.

A Quick Tip

Many public baths do not provide towels or soap, so bringing your own is reassuring. Since each spring offers different benefits, try visiting several to find the water that suits you best. Because the city has slopes and some outlying districts, checking bus routes and frequencies in advance makes bath hopping more efficient.
