Jinkakuji Temple

High on a mountain in Bungo-ono, Oita Prefecture, Jinkakuji quietly stands. Said to have been built in 570, it is an ancient temple with over a thousand years of history, counted among the three great temples of Bungo. It sits on a ridge of welded tuff with columnar jointing formed about 15 million years ago, and thanks to its fine views it is said to have once served as a base in warfare.

It is also known as the rhododendron temple, with about 500 rhododendrons over a hundred years old coloring its grounds. Because of its deep mountain location, not many people visit, which is exactly why it is a hidden power spot where you can fully enjoy stillness and the power of nature.

Highlights

- The nationally designated Important Cultural Property main hall — The main hall, conveying the architectural style of the Muromachi period, carries a dignified bearing even high on the mountain. - Guardian statues in the Unkei style — The Kongo Rikishi statues standing at the mountain gate are masterpieces praised as the only ones of their kind in Kyushu. - Rhododendrons and views — In spring about 500 rhododendrons burst into bloom, and from the ridge you can take in the mountains of Bungo-ono at a glance.

Enjoying the Seasons

The greatest viewing time is spring, when the rhododendrons bloom. The sight of pink and white flowers coloring the mountaintop is spectacular, and only in this season does it bustle with many worshippers. Fresh greenery in early summer and red leaves in autumn are also beautiful, and in winter you can see far across the distant mountains in the clear air. All year round it is wrapped in the refreshing air that belongs to a mountaintop.
