The best viewing period is typically from early October to late November. From the high-elevation mountain areas to the satoyama, autumn colors descend the mountains as if passing a baton. During the season many travelers visit from inside and outside the prefecture, but if you want to avoid weekend crowds, aiming for weekday mornings is best. The moment when foliage wet with morning dew shines all the more vividly in the morning sun is so beautiful that the hand holding the camera involuntarily trembles. "I had no idea such a place existed in Saitama"—such surprise and emotion await throughout this trip.

Nagatoro

Nagatoro, also called the "Yabakei of Kanto," is a spectacular spot where the contrast between the magnificent rock terraces carved out by the Arakawa River over long years and the burning foliage is stunning. The red and yellow trees quietly reflected on the river surface, and the harmony of the old townscape continuing since the Edo period with the colored trees, is one-of-a-kind scenery you can never taste elsewhere. Every time you press the shutter, an emotion awaits that makes you want to doubt your own eyes, thinking "Is this really Saitama?"

The best season is mid- to late November every year (the Nagatoro Town Tourism Association announces the peak as mid- to late November, within an overall season of late October to early December). Among the spots, what you must not miss is "Tsuki-no-Ishi Momiji Park." The way about 160 maples color all at once as if bursting into flame is overwhelming, so beautiful it robs visitors of words. Walking slowly through the park and passing through the tunnel of foliage covering overhead is one of the greatest joys of visiting Nagatoro in autumn.

As a local way to enjoy, what we really want you to try is the river-boat descent. The foliage viewed from atop the riverboat is exceptional, and the colors of the mountainside looked up at from a viewpoint just above the water's surface hold an emotion completely different from viewing it from the bank. "Oh, that tree over there is red," "This one's yellow"—as the boat advances leisurely, new discoveries appear one after another, a luxurious time like slowly touring a museum of nature. Also, local teahouses and souvenir shops stand in a row around the rock terraces, and enjoying a foliage stroll with the Chichibu specialty "miso potato" or "waraji katsudon" in hand is a way to spend time unique to Nagatoro. If you stroll the rock terraces while eating-walking, both your stomach and your heart are sure to be satisfied.

The recommended time is around 9 a.m. With few tourists, you can nearly monopolize the rock terraces and foliage in the clear morning air. Nagatoro in the morning, when the river surface falls as still as a mirror and the vivid foliage is reflected there, has a serene beauty completely different from the daytime. Also, the time when the western sun streams in during the evening must not be missed. The trees bathed in slanting light shine as if burning from within, and a perfect photography chance arrives.

Access

Excellent access, about a 5-minute walk from "Nagatoro Station" on the Chichibu Railway. You arrive in about 1 hour 40 minutes from Ikebukuro Station, transferring between the Seibu Chichibu Line and the Chichibu Railway. What heightens the train-trip mood is the presence of the "SL (steam locomotive) Paleo Express," which operates on weekends during the foliage season. The retro steam locomotive running through the autumn mountains while trailing black smoke is itself a highlight of the trip. Just incorporating it into either the outbound or return journey greatly enriches your travel memories.

Tip for travelers: On weekends during the foliage season, the area around Nagatoro Station is very crowded, and nearby parking lots tend to fill up from early morning, so we strongly recommend visiting by public transportation. The rock terraces become very slippery when wet from rain or morning dew, so visit in sneakers or climbing shoes with firm soles. Sandals and heels are strictly prohibited. For the river-boat descent, advance reservation is the sure bet, and since same-day slots fill up quickly especially on weekends, we recommend advance reservation from the official site.

Chichibu

The topography of a basin surrounded on all sides by mountains brings an "overwhelming sense of embrace" to Chichibu's foliage. A 360-degree field of view dyed in brocade, a sensation as if you yourself are tucked right into the middle of it—this immersion you can absolutely never taste in a city is exactly the reason Chichibu's foliage draws people again and again. Highlights are scattered around, such as Hitsujiyama Park and the area around Mitsumine Shrine, and you can enjoy a fulfilling autumn trip even on a day trip.

Among them, Mitsumine Shrine, enshrined at an elevation of 1,102m, is the absolute highlight of a Chichibu foliage trip. The best viewing is late October to early November, with autumn arriving a step earlier even within the Chichibu area. The scenery where the solemn cedar avenue of the approach and the blazing foliage intertwine is one-of-a-kind beauty clad in sacred air. The cool air of the mountain makes the foliage colors stand out even more clearly, and each visit makes you feel the depth of this "place where nature and faith intersect." The combination of the shrine buildings and foliage rising up in the morning mist is mystery itself.

For those who like hiking, Mt. Buko, also known as the setting of "Yama no Susume," and the area around the Ashigakubo Fruit Orchard Park Village, where maintained trails continue, are especially recommended. Being able to feel the changing gradations of foliage with your whole body while walking is a privilege unique to a hiking course. At Ashigakubo, dropping by the roadside station "Kaju Koen Ashigakubo" and taking a breather with juicy locally grown apples or Chichibu craft beer is also a real thrill of the trip. The deliciousness of a glass of beer gulped down with a satisfied sigh while gazing at the foliage is exceptional in a single word.

What to remember as a hidden-gem spot is the area around Otaki Onsen. Standing along a quiet gorge embraced in the deep mountain recesses of Oku-Chichibu, this area is a hidden destination still unknown to many travelers. Even in high season there are few people, and the supreme luxury of gazing at the burning foliage through the window while sinking into the hot spring comes true here. Monopolizing the autumn spectacular view while healing your travel fatigue—this is exactly the known-to-those-in-the-know way to enjoy Chichibu.

The recommended time is during the day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Chichibu basin surrounded by mountains tends to have mist in the morning and evening, and it is not uncommon to encounter the fantastical scenery woven by mist and foliage. However, the temperature is 5 to 8°C lower than the flatlands, and especially around Mitsumine Shrine it can become as cold as midwinter once November begins. Be sure to bring a fleece or down jacket you can layer.

Access

About 80 minutes from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line limited express "Chichibu." To Mitsumine Shrine, about 75 minutes by route bus from Seibu-Chichibu Station or "Mitsumineguchi Station" on the Chichibu Railway. By car, about 60 minutes from "Hanazono IC" on the Kan-Etsu Expressway via National Route 140. However, on weekends and holidays during the foliage season, the road toward Mitsumine Shrine is famous for congestion from early morning. Following the temporary parking lot signs, aim to arrive before 8 a.m. if possible, or boldly switch to public transportation—that is wise.

Tip for travelers: Since Chichibu's highlights are scattered over a wide area, making use of a rental car or taxi is convenient for getting around the areas efficiently. Mitsumine Shrine is at high elevation, and from mid-November onward cold-weather gear is essential. Since sudden weather changes are also common near the summit, tuck in a folding umbrella or rain wear too. Also, since popular restaurants often form long lines on weekends, keeping lunch to early action in the 11 a.m. hour gives peace of mind.

Okumusashi

"I had no idea such a beautiful place existed"—many who visit Okumusashi's foliage for the first time say they involuntarily utter that. Precisely because it is less well known compared to Chichibu and Nagatoro, the greatest charm of Okumusashi is that you can face the foliage leisurely while avoiding crowds. The autumn colors quietly breathing within the simple satoyama scenery have a beauty that is somehow nostalgic and resonates gently in the deep places of your heart. A trip to encounter "an autumn of one's hometown" rather than a "tourist destination"—that is Okumusashi.

The best viewing is mid- to late November, an area that decorates the conclusion of Saitama's foliage season. What especially must not be missed is the Tenranzan to Tonosuyama hiking course in Hanno City. Though it is a course low in elevation that even beginners can walk with peace of mind, the view of the Okumusashi mountain range and foliage overlooked from the summit is exquisite. Cheers often go up the moment you finish climbing, thinking "Can you see such wonderful scenery this easily?" Also, Kinchakuda is nationally famous for its spring red spider lilies, but in autumn the trees along the Koma River are dyed golden, and you can savor the peaceful satoyama autumn to your heart's content. If you walk the tunnel of yellow leaves while listening to the murmur of the river, the hustle of daily life seems to recede visibly.

Furthermore, for the more advanced, the views from Shomaru Pass and Kabasaka Pass are stunning. The panoramic view where the Okumusashi mountain ranges overlap while dyeing red keeps surprising visitors, who say "To think such a spectacular view existed in Saitama." The 360-degree foliage gazed at while receiving the wind standing on a ridgeline is exactly "a hidden spectacular view of which Saitama is proud."

The hidden gem among hidden gems is the trail around the Yugate hamlet. The area around this small hamlet, existing quietly in the mountains, has the blue of the sky and the red and yellow of the foliage stand out vividly in autumn, and you can spend a blissful time in a tranquility as if time has stopped. Precisely because few people visit, the sense of unity with nature is the best in this area. It is a place where you are certain to feel reluctant to leave at the end, thinking "Just a little more, I want to stay just a little longer."

The recommended time is from late morning to early afternoon. Since the footing on Okumusashi's mountain paths suddenly becomes hard to see when the sun goes down, plan to begin descending by 2 p.m. at the latest. The foliage coloring the mountainsides in the soft late-morning light has the best conditions in terms of being photogenic too.

Access

"Hanno Station" on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line serves as the base for Okumusashi sightseeing. Using the limited express from Ikebukuro, access is good at about 40 minutes, ideal for a day trip from the city center. To Tenranzan and Kinchakuda, 15 to 30 minutes from Hanno Station on foot or by bus. For Shomaru Pass and Kabasaka Pass, "Shomaru Station" on the Seibu Chichibu Line is the nearest station, about 65 minutes from Ikebukuro. Since public-transportation access to the major highlights is plentiful, a major charm of Okumusashi is that you can enjoy it plenty even without a car.

Tip for travelers: Okumusashi's trails are overall well maintained, but spots where fallen leaves have piled up become slipperier than you imagine. Be sure to bring trekking shoes and light rain wear. Also, since there are many areas in the mountains where smartphone reception does not reach, downloading the route map to your smartphone in advance or preparing a paper map gives peace of mind. Don't forget drinks and light meals either. Since sections without vending machines or shops can continue, preparation with leeway makes the trip comfortable.

Best Viewing of the Foliage and Ways to Enjoy

What is wonderful about Saitama's foliage is its "breadth." Since the best viewing period differs slightly by area, if you plan well you can chase Saitama's autumn over about a month. Around high-elevation Mitsumine Shrine it is late October to early November, in Nagatoro and the Chichibu city area it is early to mid-November, and in the satoyama of Okumusashi it is mid- to late November—as if an autumn-colored relay slowly continues from mountain to satoyama.

The three areas of Okumusashi, Chichibu, and Nagatoro each have completely different personalities. "Dynamic gorge beauty," "mystical mountain foliage," and "a quiet satoyama stroll"—each has a completely different face of autumn. That is why you never tire no matter how many times you visit, and there are new discoveries each time. Thoroughly savoring one area on a day trip is good, and setting off on a drive trip touring three areas over 1 night and 2 days is good too. If you incorporate hot springs and local gourmet into your plan, the satisfaction of your trip jumps even higher.

Despite being in the Tokyo suburbs, places where you can enjoy such rich and diverse autumn nature are not so many even looking across the whole country. This autumn, be sure to head to the foliage feast played by Saitama's mountains. The tranquility of Okumusashi, the mystery of Chichibu, and the spectacular views of Nagatoro await you. It is sure to become a trip that remains in your heart forever.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Nagatoro: The illumination at Tsuki-no-ishi Momiji Park charges an entry fee

The peak season announced by the Nagatoro Town Tourism Association is "late October to early December (varies by year); peak around mid-to-late November". This same wording appears on each year's page for 2023, 2024, and 2025, so it can be treated as the annual norm.

Entry to the illumination at Tsuki-no-ishi Momiji Park carries an admission fee. Going without knowing this can cause confusion on arrival.

Primary school children, pre-school children, unschooled children, people with disabilities (ticket holder themselves), and pets are admitted free.

A daytime donation scheme worth knowing about (2025): If you donate ¥100 or more during the daytime hours (10:00–16:00) of the illumination period, you receive a discount illustrated postcard that reduces the illumination entry fee from ¥300 to ¥100. If you are spending from day into evening, this effectively saves you ¥200.

Tickets can be bought on site, as well as at the Nagatoro Town Tourist Information Centre (in front of Nagatoro Station, 9:00–17:00), and at 7-Eleven Nagatoro Iwadatami and Nakanokami stores. The park is 5 minutes on foot from Kami-Nagatoro Station (not Nagatoro Station).

Car parks (from the 2025 Momiji Festival official list)

The town hall car park at ¥300 is the cheapest option, but it rarely appears in tourist guides, so it is worth remembering. Note that there is no official guidance on park-and-ride schemes or shuttle buses during the foliage season. The only restriction is: "Large vehicles are asked to refrain from entering the area between Kami-Nagatoro Station and Tsuki-no-ishi Momiji Park, 1–30 November."

Do not count on supplementary train services. The Chichibu Railway's special trains in November 2025 ran between Nagatoro and Kagemorisection, with the last departure arriving downbound at 16:34 and departing upbound at 16:01. There are no night-time additional services or last-train extensions to cover the illumination running until 21:00.

The Nagatoro Town Tourism Association streams live cameras at 4 locations — in front of Nagatoro Station, at Iwadatami, at Hodosan Shrine, and in front of Kami-Nagatoro Station — but the streams stop between 20:00 and 5:00.

Chichibu: You cannot reach Nakatsukyo Gorge by scheduled bus

This point requires particular attention. The Chichibu City autumn foliage map directs visitors to Nakatsukyo Gorge via "Chichibu-Nishiguchi (Nakatsu-gawa) bus route from Mitsumineguchi Station, approx. 45 minutes to Nakasoriya stop", but Seibu Kanko Bus's Kawamata – Nakatsu-gawa section has been suspended since 13 September 2022 due to a landslide, and 7 stops including Nakasoriya, Aihara-bashi, and Deai are within the suspended zone. In other words, the route described in that guide is no longer possible.

Furthermore, the Chichibu City Community Bus Kawamata Line "Seseragi-go" was abolished on 1 April 2026. Nakatsukyo Gorge can now only be reached by private car or taxi. Prefectural Road Nakatsu-gawa-Mitsumineguchi Parking Line is operating with alternating single-lane traffic, and the Chichibu City official website states the car park status as "none".

The Chichibu Tourism Association describes the peak season as "across various parts of Chichibu from late October through late November", with the timing varying by elevation.

The ginkgo avenue at Chichibu Muse Park lines both sides of the Sky Road for approx. 3 km with approx. 500 trees. It is about 20 minutes by the circular bus "Gururin-go" from Seibu-Chichibu Station or Chichibu Station.

SL Paleo Express runs mainly on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 20 March to 6 December 2026, one round trip per day between Kumagaya and Mitsumineguchi, all seats reserved. The SL reserved seat ticket costs ¥1,000 via the online reservation system (payment in advance) or ¥1,100 at station windows, and a separate rail fare is required. Reservations open at midnight one month before each operating date.

Note that the Chichibu Night Festival on 2–3 December brings large-scale traffic restrictions to the city centre. As this overlaps with the tail end of the foliage season, either plan around these dates or factor them into your itinerary.

Oku-Musashi: No weekday bus to Kuromasan Waterfall

The scheduled bus to Kuromasan (Kuroyama) Sanba Waterfall (Kawagoe Kanko Bus Kuromasan Line, between Ogose Station and Kuromasan) changed from 1 April 2026 to weekends and public holidays only, with no service on weekdays. The official explanation cites a decline in users and rising costs. There is no way to reach the falls by public transport on weekdays.

On the other hand, all three car parks are town-managed and free.

The total is only 50 spaces. Ogose Town warns: "Particularly between around 10:00 and 15:00, it may take more than 30 minutes to find a parking space," and asks visitors not to park on the road and to refrain from parking for more than 3 hours. During busy periods, the Ogose Plum Grove car park is also opened free of charge.

Kuromasan Sanba Waterfall has no entry fee and is open year-round. However, although the entry restrictions on the hiking trail from the falls to Kasasugi Pass have been lifted following the damage from Typhoon No. 19 in 2019, the wooden bridge was washed away and has not been replaced, and rough sections remain. The route involves river crossings, chain sections, and rocky terrain. The upper reaches above Tengu Falls cannot be passed through when the water level is high.

For the Hanno City side, the announcements from the Oku-Musashi Hanno Tourism Association are straightforward to reference: the city has an elevation range of 70 m to 1,300 m.

Limited Express Laview is fully reserved seating. The limited express surcharge from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu is ¥900 (revised upwards from ¥710 on 1 July 2023). A separate rail fare is required, and purchasing on the day adds ¥200.

Bear Awareness

Saitama Prefecture posted a "Beware of Bears and Wild Boars!" alert dated 20 August 2026, warning of sightings in mountain areas centred on the Chichibu area and Hanno City. The prefecture also mentions predictions of a poor acorn harvest; if you are heading into the mountains, carry a bear bell. The prefecture also publishes an official bear sighting map.
