Enjoying the Seasons

In the fresh greenery season the cedar groves of the ancient forest are wrapped in lush green. Autumn is the most splendid time, with magnificent fall foliage along the Miya River that flows through the grounds. At New Year the grounds fill with visitors for the first prayers, letting you feel the prestige of the foremost shrine of Totomi. In winter the solemn silhouettes of the old cedars stand out in the clear air.

Practical Travel Notes

  • The grounds are very large, and walking to the far end of the approach takes time even one way. Allow at least an hour if you want to look around slowly.

  • The highlights, such as the matchmaking Hyo tree, the Wish Pine, and the Gold and Silver Stone, are spread out, so checking the map at the entrance first makes for an efficient visit.
  • After your visit you can enjoy local food and sweets at Okuni Kotomachi Yokocho. Hours and shops can change, so confirm on the official website.
