Historic Site of Perry's Arrival

Shimoda City at the southern tip of Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka is known as the site where Admiral Perry's American fleet arrived in 1854 and the "Japan-US Convention of Peace and Amity" was concluded. Shimoda is a historically important port town that was the stage of Japan's opening to the world.

Perry Road and Bakumatsu Townscape

Shimoda City's "Perry Road" is a walking path said to be where Admiral Perry walked for treaty negotiations, a charming street with namako-kabe (navy plaster wall) buildings retaining Bakumatsu-era atmosphere. Ryosenji Temple exhibits materials related to the Japan-US Convention of Peace and Amity.

Shimoda's Sea and Nature

Shimoda City's sea is part of Izu Peninsula's beautiful coastline with popular beaches including Shirahama Beach and Tatado-hama. Many beach-goers visit in summer with marine sports including snorkeling and surfing also active.
