Negoroji

Negoroji in Iwade City, Wakayama, is the head temple of the Shingi Shingon school. It began in 1132 when the great teacher Kakuban founded a hall of teaching on Mount Koya, later moving to this site and developing greatly. Across its vast grounds rises the national treasure great pagoda, known as one of the largest wooden multi-treasure pagodas in Japan, whose imposing form overwhelms visitors. The temple held great power in the warring states era but lost much in the fires of 1585, before being restored in the Edo period. It is a lesser-known ancient temple that quietly conveys the weight of history.
