Shiogama Jinja: A Cave Shrine for Safe Childbirth at Wakanoura, Wakayama
Shiogama Jinja
Shiogama Jinja in Wakanoura, Wakayama City, stands close to Tamatsushima Jinja as a mysterious ancient shrine whose sanctuary fits inside a rock cave. Once said to have been a purification place known as the cave of the palanquin, it has long drawn faith as a god of safe childbirth and child blessing, as well as long life and safe voyages. Its enshrined deity appears in the myth of the two brother gods recorded in the Kojiki, and from that tale the shrine is cherished as a god of safe childbirth. Though set in a scenic spot praised since ancient times, few people visit, making it a hidden sacred site.
