Mount Nokogiri

Straddling Kyonan Town in Awa District and Futtsu City in Chiba Prefecture, Mount Nokogiri (Nokogiriyama) is a peak about 329 meters high, distinguished by rock faces that rise sharply like the teeth of a saw. Because it once thrived as a quarry for Boshu stone, the mountainside still bears the marks where huge blocks were cut away, creating a distinctive rugged landscape. Within the mountain spreads Nihonji Temple, known as a sacred place where one of Japans largest cliff-carved Buddhas rises.

Highlights

• The Great Buddha (Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai): At about 31 meters tall, it is one of the largest stone Buddhas in Japan. The original was completed in 1783 in the Edo period, and later restoration gave it its present form.
• Jigoku-nozoki (Hell Peep): A thrilling viewpoint that looks down about 100 meters from a sheer cliff. It juts out from steep rock left by quarrying, and the view over Tokyo Bay is spectacular.
• Hyakushaku Kannon: A massive stone-wall carving about 30 meters high. It is a modern cliff-carved image sculpted in the Showa era in prayer for the repose of war dead and other wishes.
• The 1,500 Arhats: Arhat statues placed throughout the grounds are wonderfully expressive, and hunting for them as you walk is part of the fun.
• Summit and observation deck: On a clear day you can take in Tokyo Bay, the Boso Peninsula and the Miura Peninsula, and in good conditions even Mount Fuji.

Seasonal Highlights

Spring (March to May) brings beautiful cherry blossoms and fresh greenery to the grounds, making it an ideal season to visit. In summer (June to August) the mountain greenery deepens, and an early-morning visit away from the sun is pleasant. Autumn (October to November) colors the grounds with foliage that harmonizes wonderfully with the cliff Buddhas. In winter (December to February) the air is clear enough to see distant mountain ranges, and there are fewer tourists, so you can explore in quiet.

Access and Basic Information

• Location: 184 Motona, Kyonan Town, Awa District, Chiba Prefecture (Nihonji Temple)
• Access: About a 10-minute walk from Hamakanaya Station on the JR Uchibo Line to the base station of the Nokogiriyama Ropeway
• Ropeway: Round trip 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for children; one way 650 yen for adults and 320 yen for children. Operating hours are 9:00 to 17:00 (until 16:00 from November 16 to February 15).
• Nihonji admission: Charged separately (a viewing fee is set to help maintain the grounds; please check official sources for the latest rate).
• Time needed: About two to three hours (the grounds are very large, so comfortable shoes are recommended).

• Best season and time: The clear air of autumn and winter gives distant views, and the fresh greenery of spring is comfortable too. In summer, avoid the heat and visit in the morning right after opening.
• How to climb: If you are unsure of your stamina, using the ropeway is reassuring. Strong walkers can also hike up the trail from Hamakanaya Station. There are many stone steps and some steep slopes, so easy-to-move-in clothing and shoes are essential.
• Nearby spots: From Kanaya Port at the foot of the mountain, you can cross to the Miura Peninsula (Kurihama) on the Tokyo Bay Ferry. Kanaya is also known for seafood such as aji namero, so it pairs well with a ferry trip.
• Budget feel: A round-trip ropeway ride plus the Nihonji admission comes to a few thousand yen. Even including a meal and souvenirs, a rough guide is a few thousand yen per person for the day.

A Word of Advice

There are many stone steps and some steep slopes in the grounds, so easy-to-move-in clothing and shoes are essential. Jigoku-nozoki is more nerve-wracking than you might expect. On the way back, the route crossing to the Miura Peninsula (Kurihama) on the Tokyo Bay Ferry near Kanaya Port is also popular.
