Daifukuji Gake Kannon

Daifukuji in Tateyama, popularly known as the Cliff Kannon, is an old temple whose vermilion Kannon hall seems to cling to the midpoint of a sheer cliff. It enshrines an eleven-faced Kannon carved as a relief directly into the rock face, and has long been worshipped by seafarers praying for safety at sea and bountiful catches. From the hall one looks out over the whole of Tateyama Bay, a view of breathtaking beauty.

Highlights

- The eleven-faced Kannon carved as a relief into the cliff rock is the must-see principal image. - A stone stairway leads up to the vermilion hall, from which a sweeping panorama of Tateyama Bay and the town unfolds. - On clear days one can even glimpse Mount Fuji across the sea, making it a renowned spot for scenery.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring frames the sea through cherry blossoms, summer shows off the blue of the bay, and autumn offers far-reaching views in crisp air. In winter the air clears and Mount Fuji appears beautifully on more days. At dusk the sea turns golden, forming a splendid contrast with the hall.

Access and Basic Information

- About a 15-minute walk from Nako-Funakata Station on the JR Uchibo Line. - Roughly 10 minutes by car from central Tateyama, with parking available. - A steep stone stairway leads to the hall, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

A Quick Tip

The view of Tateyama Bay that opens up at the top of the stairs is exceptional. Choose a clear day with crisp air and you may be lucky enough to see all the way to Mount Fuji. Be sure to pray for safety at sea and good health.
