Senkoji: A Sacred Mountain Temple of Hida with Enku Buddhas and Ancient Cedars (Takayama, Gifu)
Senkoji
Senkoji, located in Nyukawa, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, is a historic ancient temple set in the mountains of Hida. Situated on the mid-slope of Mount Kesamaru at about 900 meters elevation, it has long drawn faith as a sacred mountain of Shugendo asceticism. Also known as a treasury of Buddha statues carved by the wandering Edo-period monk Enku, its grounds, wrapped in deep forest, are filled with a pure air that seems to cleanse the hearts of visitors.
Highlights
- Enku Buddhas: Many simple yet powerful Buddha statues said to have been carved by Enku here remain and can be viewed in the treasure hall. For fans of Enku, it is something of a holy site. - The Five Cedars of Senkoji: A giant tree over a thousand years old that splits into five trunks from its base, designated a National Natural Monument. It is a sacred tree exuding overwhelming life force. - Moss-Covered Approach: The forest approach, where dappled sunlight filters through, is mystical, making worship while forest bathing a pleasant time.
