Hida Takayama Old Town and Morning Markets โ Walking an Edo Merchant Quarter
Hida Takayama Old Town and Morning Markets
Takayama, in the high Hida basin of Gifu Prefecture, is one of Japan's best-preserved Edo-period merchant towns โ a place where sake brewery districts, traditional craft shops, and merchant houses line streets that have changed little in outward appearance for two centuries. Combined with its celebrated morning markets and proximity to the Northern Alps and Shirakawa-go, Takayama rewards both the cultural and the outdoor traveler.
Highlights
The Sanmachi Suji historic district, three blocks of immaculate Edo-era merchant architecture, is Takayama's cultural heart. The brown wooden facades, low eaves, and latticed windows of the sake breweries, craft shops, and restaurants create a townscape of consistent historical character unlike anything in Japan's larger cities. Several of the sake breweries offer tastings of their distinctive Hida varieties โ rich, slightly sweet styles suited to the cold mountain winters.
Takayama's two morning markets โ Jinya-mae Asaichi and Miyagawa Asaichi โ operate daily from 7am. They are genuinely local institutions rather than tourist productions: farmers sell seasonal vegetables and mountain herbs; artisans offer traditional Hida crafts including Sarubobo (red doll) charms; pickle sellers arrange vibrant displays of pickled mountain vegetables. The markets have operated in various forms for centuries.
The Takayama Festival floats (Yatai), stored in dedicated warehouses (Yatai-Kaikan) and displayed publicly twice a year during the Sanno and Hachiman festivals, represent perhaps Japan's most technically accomplished festival craft tradition โ six centuries of accumulated woodcarving, lacquer, and mechanical automata artistry.
Getting There & Tips
From Nagoya, the Wide View Hida limited express takes approximately 2.5 hours to Takayama Station. From Matsumoto, buses cross the Norikura highlands (seasonal).
Best Time to Visit
April (Sanno Festival) and October (Hachiman Festival) for the famous float processions. The old town is beautiful year-round, particularly under snow.
