Takayama Jinya changes its viewing hours by season: officially 8:45 to 17:00 from 1 April to 31 October and 8:45 to 16:30 from 1 November to 31 March. Admission is a modest 500 yen for adults and free for high school age and under, so a full day comes to around 4,000 to 5,000 yen per person including market snacking, lunch and souvenirs. The best seasons are the times of the Takayama Festival held in spring and autumn, and the periods of fresh green and bright leaves when the air is clear for walking. The morning market runs from early morning to before noon, so an eight oclock start is ideal. Those who wish to avoid crowds should aim for the early morning before the Sanmachi streets fill up during the day. Nearby, along with the Takayama Festival Float Hall at Sakurayama Hachimangu, real facilities such as the Hida Takayama Museum of History and Art and the Kusakabe Folk Museum, a preserved Edo era merchant house, sit within walking distance.

A Quick Tip

Putting the outdoor parts in the morning, the market and the lanes, and the indoor parts such as the Jinya and the float hall in the afternoon makes the day less affected by the weather. The Jinya closes earlier at 16:30 from November to February, so in winter a morning visit is the safe choice. Keep an eye on each shop closing time while you enjoy snacking, and you will use the day without waste.
