Gujo-Hachiman is a water castle town where clear water runs through the streets. From Sogi Sui, chosen as the very first of Japan one hundred famous waters, to the lanes along the channels and the keep that rises on the hill, this is a town of water and dance that fills with the Gujo Odori in summer. 9:00 Start in the Gujo-Hachiman castle town Begin your walk from the bridge over the Yoshida River. The clear flow welcomes the start of the journey. 9:30 Walk the Igawa Komichi A small lane where an irrigation channel from the Edo period still flows. Carp and river fish swim in the water, a scene typical of Gujo where daily life and water are tied together. 10:15 On to Yanaka Mizu no Komichi Water runs along a path paved with countless pebbles while willows sway in the wind. Small museums dot the area, making this a quiet and tasteful corner. 11:00 Touch the famous water at Sogi Sui A spring chosen as the first of the Ministry of the Environment one hundred famous waters. It is a symbolic water site that local people still use with care. 12:00 Lunch of local Gujo food Sweetfish dishes, Gujo miso and local soba. Enjoy the specialties at a shop in the castle town. 13:30 Climb up to Gujo-Hachiman Castle A castle known for its reconstructed wooden keep, rising on the hill. From the keep, views spread over the castle town and the surrounding mountains. 15:30 Return near the station to finish End the day by trying a food sample making workshop or choosing local sake as a souvenir.Highlights
The greatest charm is the water scenery that runs throughout the town. Along the Igawa Komichi and Yanaka Mizu no Komichi you can see, up close, channels still used as everyday water. The view from Gujo-Hachiman Castle on the summit is also superb, and in some seasons it is known as a castle in the sky floating above the mist.Access and Tips
The town center can be toured on foot, but Gujo-Hachiman Castle sits on a hill, so you climb slopes and stairs. Wear comfortable shoes. The water lanes are charming but the footing can be wet, so walk carefully to avoid slipping.A Quick Tip
