Ichinomiya Nukisaki Shrine

Located in Tomioka, Gunma, Ichinomiya Nukisaki Shrine is a venerable site that has drawn the reverence of people since ancient times as the first shrine of the old Kozuke province, with a history reaching back 1,500 years. Its most striking feature is a rare layout known as a descending shrine: after climbing a long flight of stone steps and passing through the great gate, you descend another set of steps to reach the main halls. It is said to have been built on land of strong energy known as a dragon hollow, and visitors sense a distinctive air upon entering this sacred ground.
