Ashitakeyama, the Sacred Mountain of Shobara with a Japanese Pyramid Legend

🕊️ Hiroshima|June 22, 2026

Ashitakeyama

Rising about 815 meters in Shobara City, Ashitakeyama is a sacred mountain with a curious shape that appears triangular from north, south, east, or west. It has long been linked to legends of an imperial tomb, and in the early twentieth century it drew nationwide attention as a so called Japanese pyramid. The truth remains a mystery, and that mystery only fuels the imagination of visitors. Simply walking its quiet trails brings a sense of being cleansed. Far from the bustle of major tourist sites, it is a hidden gem for those seeking spiritual energy.

Highlights

- The cluster of massive stones on neighboring Kikyozan, including Mirror Rock, the Direction Stone, and Jimu Rock, said to be remnants of ancient rituals and wrapped in a mysterious air. - Strangely shaped rocks such as Hawk Rock, Tengu Rock, and Eboshi Rock, natural sculptures that leave a lasting impression. - The view of the Shobara mountains from the summit, a sweeping reward that comes with the satisfaction of the climb.

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring into early summer the fresh greenery is dazzling, and the trail offers a refreshing forest walk. In autumn the surrounding trees turn color, creating a fine contrast between stone and foliage. Snow is possible in winter, so check your gear and the weather before setting out.
