Sera Highland and Agricultural Park: Tourism Farm Enjoying Flowers and Fruits of Northern Hiroshima Prefecture

"Sera Highland" in Sera Town, Sera District, Hiroshima Prefecture is a village of flowers and fruit spreading across a gently sloping plateau. Dotted over the gentle hills are flower fields that bloom in profusion with each season and tourist farms where you can pick fruit. It is an area where, amid clear air and wide-open highland scenery, you can fully enjoy colorful flowers and seasonal fruit. As a "highland of flowers" for enjoying flowers through four seasons from spring tulips to autumn cosmos, many tourists visit from within and outside Hiroshima Prefecture.

How Sera Highland Came to Be

Sera Highland is a plateau-like landform of continuous gentle undulations, blessed with a climate suited to growing flowers and fruit thanks to the large difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. It was once land given over mainly to agriculture, but tourist farms opened one after another making the most of its rich nature and climate, and today it has become known throughout Japan as the "highland of flowers." The large-scale flower fields that make use of the vast grounds are overwhelming, and they are arranged so that various flowers bloom in succession through the four seasons.

Flower Fields That Color the Seasons

The greatest appeal of Sera Highland is the magnificent flower fields that change their appearance with each season. In spring there are the "Cherry Blossom Festival," the "Tulip Festival," the "Hill of Moss Phlox and Nemophila" and the "Wisteria and Lupine Festival"; in early summer the "Rose & Flower Garden" and the "Hill of Hydrangeas and Hollyhocks"; in summer the "Sunflower Festival"; and in autumn the "Dahlia and Garden Mum Festival" and the "Hill of Kochia and Cosmos" — flower events blooming one after another. The carpet of flowers spreading across the vast hillside is as beautiful as a painting and is popular for photography. Depending on when you visit, you will meet completely different flower scenery.

Sera Highland Farm (Tulips, Sunflowers, Dahlias)

"Sera Highland Farm" is a tourism farm famous for approximately 750,000 tulips in April, approximately 600,000 sunflowers in July-August, and approximately 100,000 dahlias in autumn. The colorful flower fields spreading across vast farmland are of an overwhelming scale, also a topic-generating spectacular spot on Instagram and other social media.

Cosmos at Sera Dream Park

At "Sera Dream Park," cosmos are cultivated on a large scale in autumn. The cosmos fields spreading everywhere are beloved as a synonym for Sera Highland's autumn.

Fruit Picking and Tasting the Harvest

Sera Highland is also known for its wealth of tourist farms where you can pick fruit. From summer into autumn you can enjoy harvest picking and taste freshly picked fruit (the items offered and the timing differ from farm to farm). Fruit grown on a highland with large temperature swings is strongly sweet and has a reputation for high quality. At the direct sales shops attached to the farms you can also buy fresh fruit and processed products. Being able to enjoy the experience of harvesting and the flavors of the season alongside the flower fields is an appeal unique to Sera Highland.

Winery and Local Fruits

Sera Town has multiple wineries conducting manufacture, sales, and tasting of wine using locally grown grapes. Sweets using Sera-grown pears, peaches, and grapes are also well-represented.

Best Season and Access

The flower fields can be enjoyed from spring to autumn with the varieties changing, and fruit picking is in season from summer to autumn. It is best to choose your timing to match the flowers or fruit you want to see. For access, it is convenient to head to each farm by car from the Sera Interchange on the Onomichi Expressway (Chugoku Yamanami Kaido). Because the farms are scattered over the highland, touring by car suits the area. Spend a day on the wide-open highland enjoying seasonal flowers and fruit to your heart's content. There is also a highway bus from JR Hiroshima Station taking about 1 hour (toward Koyama/Chiyoda), and car access from the Miyoshi and Onomichi directions.

Practical Information

• Peak and best season: four flower tourism farms (Sera Highland Farm / Flower village Kamu no Sato / Sora no Hanabatake Sera Kogen Hana no Mori / Sera Fuji-en) open with rotating events, from the spring "Cherry Blossom Festival," "Tulip Festival," "Hill of Moss Phlox and Nemophila" and "Wisteria and Lupine Festival," to the early-summer "Rose & Flower Garden" and "Hill of Hydrangeas and Hollyhocks," the summer "Sunflower Festival," and the autumn "Dahlia and Garden Mum Festival" and "Hill of Kochia and Cosmos." • Event period / light-ups: opening days are set for each event, and there are periods when the farms are not open. On some days there is evening opening or early-morning and extended opening, such as "Sera Kogen Candle Night" (Sora no Hanabatake Sera Kogen Hana no Mori).
• Fees: an admission fee is required for each event. For the Hill of Moss Phlox and Nemophila / Tulip Festival / Wisteria and Lupine Festival / Rose & Flower Garden [early summer] / Sunflower Festival / Dahlia and Garden Mum Festival, adults (junior high school age and above) pay 700 to 1,200 yen and children (age 4 to sixth grade) 300 to 600 yen. For the Cherry Blossom Festival / Hill of Hydrangeas and Hollyhocks / Rose & Flower Garden [autumn] / Hill of Kochia and Cosmos, adults pay 500 to 1,000 yen and children 200 to 500 yen. Age 3 and under are free. Fees vary with the flowering status and reach the maximum at peak bloom. Showing a disability certificate gives half price for the holder only. Payment is accepted in cash, by credit card, transit IC, iD, QUICPay and others.
• Access: the four farms are far enough apart that you move between them by car. The nearest exit is Sera IC on the Onomichi Expressway (Chugoku Yamanami Kaido), and touring by car is the basic approach. Sera Winery is at 518-1 Kurobuchi, Sera-cho, Sera-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture (TEL 0847-25-4300), open 9:00 to 17:00 (10:00 to 16:00 in January and February), closed Tuesdays and over the New Year period (open on public holidays and during events).
• Clothing and gear: you will be walking through flower fields on hilly ground, so wear shoes that are easy to walk in. The summer Sunflower Festival has little shade, so prepare for the heat with a hat, sunscreen and drinks.

*If you come by car, the driver must absolutely not taste or drink alcohol.* *Sera Winery offers wine tasting and sales, but public transport around Sera Highland is limited and moving between the farms assumes a car. Drink-driving is prohibited by law. If you want to enjoy a tasting, either leave the wheel to a companion who is not driving, or be sure to secure transport that does not involve drinking, such as a tour bus or a taxi.*
