Tomonoura Half Day Stroll Through a Tide Waiting Port Town
This course spends a relaxed half day walking the old port town of Tomonoura, facing the Seto Inland Sea. The Edo era stone lantern and the Taichoro hall with its sweeping sea view still carry strong traces of a harbor that once thrived as a place to wait for the tide. Take your time to savor the retro townscape and the sea scenery.Course Route
10:00 Bus from Fukuyama Station to Tomonoura About thirty minutes by local bus from Fukuyama Station, where the bullet train also stops. Get off at the harbor stop and begin walking amid the scent of the sea. 10:30 View the stone lantern and harbor Head to the Joyato lantern, the symbol of Tomonoura built in 1859. As a harbor lantern it is the tallest in Japan, and together with the wharf it makes a perfect photo spot. 11:00 Walk the old townscape Stroll the lanes lined with latticed houses and storehouses. Old merchant houses and townhouses stand in rows, a scene of character that has appeared in films and animation. 11:40 Fukuzenji Taichoro From the Taichoro hall beside the main temple, a fine view of the Seto Inland Sea and Sensuijima opens up. Enjoy from the tatami room the view praised by a Korean envoy as the finest scenery in the east. 12:20 Lunch in the port town Have lunch at a restaurant serving sea bream dishes or Seto Inland Sea seafood. Tomonoura is known for sea bream fishing and you can taste the local specialty. 13:30 The view from Ioji temple If time allows, climb to Ioji on the hillside. The stone steps lead to a view that takes in the town and harbor of Tomonoura. 14:30 Bus back to Fukuyama Station Return from the harbor stop to Fukuyama Station to close the half day course.Highlights
The lantern and wharf are the signature scene of Tomonoura, especially beautiful at dusk. The view of the Seto Inland Sea from Taichoro is a must see. The townhouses in the narrow lanes and the temples on the slopes make the history of the port town felt with every step.Access and Tips
Access to Tomonoura is basically by bus from Fukuyama Station. The streets in town are narrow with many one way sections, so walking suits the area better than driving. Taichoro is open until around five in the evening, so it is best to start in the morning.A Quick Tip
There are slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. A half day is rewarding, but staying until the quiet dusk that suits a tide waiting harbor lets you feel the towns charm even more deeply.๐ Location & Access
