About Hokkaido's Autumn Foliage

Japan's autumn color always begins here. By late September, the first color appears near the summit of the Daisetsuzan (Great Snowy Mountains), and gradually the brocade of reds, oranges, and yellows spreads down to the valleys, river gorges, and lakeshores below. The scale and drama of Hokkaido's autumn colors is on a completely different level from the foliage of Honshu — the air is crisper, the skies are wider, and the colors seem to burn more intensely in the northern light.

The typical season runs from late September to early November, with different spots reaching their peak at different times. Daisetsuzan, Layer Cloud Gorge (Sounkyo), and Lake Shikotsu each have their own character and timing — learning those differences is the key to planning your own perfect autumn trip.

Daisetsuzan (Taisetsuzan) — Japan's Earliest Autumn Colors

The Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group in the center of Hokkaido is Japan's largest national park and the undisputed starting point of autumn in Japan. At the higher elevations of Asahidake (the highest peak in Hokkaido at 2,291 meters), the mountain grasses and low-lying alpine vegetation begin to turn crimson and gold in mid-September — weeks before anywhere else in Japan.

Taking the Asahidake Ropeway to the 5th station (1,600 meters) during peak color is one of the most extraordinary autumn experiences available anywhere in Japan. The volcanic landscape — steaming fumaroles, bare rock, and a carpet of brilliant autumn color stretching to the horizon — is unlike anything else. If conditions allow, hiking up toward the summit reveals increasingly dramatic color as the altitude increases.

Best Season

The ropeway mid-station (5th station) area peaks in mid to late September. Lower-elevation areas around the Asahidake Onsen village peak in early to mid-October.

Access

From Asahikawa Airport or Asahikawa Station, take the Dohoku Bus Asahidake Onsen Line to the Asahidake Ropeway base station (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). By car from Asahikawa, approximately 1 hour on Highway 1160.

Sounkyo Gorge (Layer Cloud Gorge) — Towering Cliffs and Autumn Color

Sounkyo Gorge, carved by the Ishikari River through the Daisetsuzan volcanic range, is one of Hokkaido's most famous natural landmarks. The gorge walls rise dramatically — up to 150 meters high in places — and the rocky cliffs are cloaked in maple and birch trees that transform to brilliant reds and oranges in autumn. Two particularly spectacular waterfalls within the gorge — Ryusei-no-Taki (Meteor Falls) and Ginga-no-Taki (Milky Way Falls) — add to the drama.

The Sounkyo Onsen resort at the entrance to the gorge makes an excellent base for exploring. From here, the Kurodake Ropeway carries you up to the subalpine zone (7th station), where the autumn colors combine with sweeping mountain views.

Best Season

The gorge and lower areas typically peak in early to mid-October. Higher elevations on the Kurodake Ropeway reach peak color slightly earlier.

Access

From JR Kamikawa Station, take the Dohoku Bus Sounkyo Line to the Sounkyo bus terminal (approximately 30 minutes). The gorge walk begins from the bus terminal.

Lake Shikotsu — Deep Blue Water and Autumn Mountains

Lake Shikotsu, a large caldera lake southwest of Sapporo, is one of Hokkaido's most beautiful natural settings. Its remarkably clear water — one of Japan's cleanest lakes — maintains a deep, brilliant blue throughout the year, and in autumn the surrounding mountains of Tarumae, Fuppushi, and Eniwa are draped in vivid fall colors that reflect in the surface.

Unlike the more crowded mountain locations, Lake Shikotsu has a quieter, more reflective character in autumn. Kayaking on the lake during the color season, with the autumn mountains reflected in the mirror-calm water, is one of Hokkaido's most beautiful experiences. The lakeside resort area of Shikotsu-ko Onsen has a small selection of hotels and restaurants.

Best Season

The surrounding mountains typically peak in mid to late October, somewhat later than the higher-elevation spots further north.

Access

Take the Hokkaido Chuo Bus bound for "Shikotsuko" (route Ku-4, the Chitose Airport / Lake Shikotsu line) to the terminus: about 45 minutes from JR Chitose Station, or about 55 minutes from New Chitose Airport, from where the bus calls at Chitose Station on the way (timetable revised 1 April 2026; Hokkaido Chuo Bus official timetable / Kyukamura Shikotsuko). By car from New Chitose Airport, approximately 40 minutes.

Tips for Enjoying Hokkaido's Autumn Foliage

• Layer up. Autumn in Hokkaido moves fast and temperatures drop sharply — especially above 1,000 meters. Always bring a down jacket and rain gear even if it looks sunny.
• Rent a car. Public transport serves the main spots, but renting a car gives you the flexibility to follow the color as it develops, stopping at viewpoints, roadside restaurants, and lesser-known spots along the way.
• Book accommodation early. The popular spots — especially Sounkyo Onsen and Asahidake Onsen — fill up quickly in October. Book at least 1–2 months ahead.
• Check the forecasts. Autumn color forecasts are published by major Japanese weather agencies and tourism websites from late August onward. These are essential for timing your visit to the peak.
• Combine experiences. Hokkaido's autumn is not just about the foliage — it is also the season for salmon running in the rivers, new-harvest potatoes and corn at farm stands, and the best dairy products of the year. Build a trip that combines all of these dimensions.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Daisetsuzan: "No Shuttle Bus" in 2026

Ginsen-dai and Kogen Onsen, the two top foliage destinations within Daisetsuzan, are subject to private-vehicle restrictions every year. The 2026 arrangements differ significantly from previous years — go on old information and you will not be able to get in.

The Kamikawa Town official site explicitly states for the Kogen Onsen line: "This is not the usual shuttle-bus operation." "Just take the bus" is not an option in 2026.

During the restriction period, entering the area requires advance reservation and advance payment via KKday, with a deadline of 15:00 the previous day; account registration is also mandatory. You cannot decide to go on a whim on the day. The cooperation fee is ¥2,000 per vehicle; the daily cap is 50 vehicles for Ginsen-dai and 150 vehicles for Kogen Onsen.

Kogen Onsen Nature Trail timetable (Higuma Information Centre) is strictly enforced. Entry from 07:00; departure from the ponds must begin by 13:00 from Kogen-numa and by 14:00 from Midori-numa, with all visitors required to be off the course by 15:00; the gate is locked at 16:30. From 19 September to early October, visitors follow an individual entry format after attending a briefing.

Winter road closures: Ginsen-dai line closes 1 October; Kogen Onsen road closes at 17:00 on 9 October. Once October arrives, access simply ceases to be possible.

Ropeway Fares and Maintenance Closures

Asahidake Ropeway: Return fare ¥3,500 for the period 1 June–31 October. Departures every 15 minutes. Under maintenance closure 16 November–10 December.

Kurodake Ropeway: Return fare ¥3,000. Operating hours shorten to 07:00–17:00 from 1 October and to 08:00–16:00 from 16 October; last upbound car is 40 minutes before closing. The lift is under maintenance from 16 October to 30 November, meaning it is not possible to ascend above the 7th station from mid-October onwards.

Peak Season and Lake Shikotsu

Daisetsuzan's "Japan's earliest autumn foliage" was announced as starting on 2 September 2026 — approximately 5 days later than the average year.

The foliage peak at Lake Shikotsu is mid to late October, roughly a month behind Daisetsuzan. Hokkaido's autumn colour descends from the mountains to the lowlands, so September at Daisetsuzan followed by October at Lake Shikotsu / Sounkyo is the logical itinerary. Car-park charge: ¥500 for passenger vehicles.

Sounkyo at Night: It's an Illumination, Not a Festival

The night-time event at Sounkyo is called "Sounkyo Onsen: Miracle Illumination." In 2026 it runs 13 September–12 October, 18:00–21:00 (last admission 20:30), with a foliage valley conservation fee of ¥1,000 per person. The event has run continuously since it began in 2018.
