Onneto: A Mystical Five-Color Lake and Nature Power Spot in Eastern Hokkaido

Onneto

In eastern Hokkaido, at the foot of Mount Meakan in Akan-Mashu National Park, the lake of Onneto spreads quietly. Meaning old marsh or large marsh in the Ainu language, this lake is also called the Five-Color Marsh because its surface shifts moment by moment to emerald green or cobalt blue depending on the angle, time of day, and weather. The stillness held within a primeval forest, and the divine figures of Mount Meakan and Mount Akan-Fuji mirrored on the water, make it a leading natural power spot in eastern Hokkaido.

Highlights

- Surface That Turns Five Colors: A mystical surface that changes color with weather and the angle of light, showing a different face each visit. - View of Mount Meakan and Akan-Fuji: A stunning view woven by the mountains rising beyond the lake and their inverted reflections on the water. - Walking Path of the Primeval Forest: The lakeside path is a healing space wrapped in untouched nature and stillness. - Hot Spring Waterfall: Nearby is the Onneto Yu-no-Taki, where a hot spring flows down as a waterfall, adding to the sights.

Enjoying the Seasons

From fresh green to summer, the blue of the lake stands out against deep green for a refreshing walk. Autumn dyes the lakeside with foliage, combining with the five-color surface for a stunning view. On clear-aired mornings, the surface mirrors the mountains like glass, a prime chance for a photograph. In winter the road may be closed, so check road conditions before your visit.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Moashoro, Ashoro-cho, Ashoro-gun, Hokkaido - Access: About 2 hours by car from JR Obihiro Station, or about 30 minutes by car from Akanko Onsen - Hours: A daytime stroll is recommended (take care at night and in winter) - Admission: Free to visit (parking available)

A Quick Tip

Access by public transport is difficult, so a visit by car is realistic. The lakeside path is a natural trail, so comfortable shoes are recommended. On windless mornings the surface becomes like a mirror, a prime time to see an inverted Mount Akan-Fuji. Touring it together with the nearby Onneto Yu-no-Taki lets you fully enjoy the grand nature of eastern Hokkaido.
