Matsumae Park

Best Season

The typical peak bloom is from late April to early May. Spring arrives approximately one month later here than in Honshu, meaning the cherry blossoms often reach full bloom during the Golden Week holiday period — a convenient overlap for travelers. However, peak bloom lasts only about one week, so check the flowering information on the official Matsumae Town website and tourism association social media frequently, and aim for your visit at the optimal moment.

The recommended time of day is early morning, 7:00–9:00 AM. With fewer tourists, the cherry blossoms lit by morning sunlight have a translucent, magical beauty that mid-day light cannot replicate. The combination with Matsumae Castle in the morning calm is truly extraordinary.

Access

From Kikonai Station, take the Hakodate Bus Matsumae Line (about 1 hour 30 minutes). Matsumae Town's official website states that there is no direct service from Hakodate, so allow about 3 hours in total, changing once at Kikonai (Hakodate to Kikonai is by Hakodate Bus or the Donan Isaribi Railway). By car from Hakodate, about 2 hours (approx. 95 km) via National Route 228.

Goryokaku (Hakodate City)

Japan's first Western-style star-shaped fort, built in 1864 — Goryokaku is both a historically significant landmark and one of Hokkaido's most beloved cherry blossom spots. Approximately 1,600 somei yoshino trees fill the fort's interior and line the moats, and when in full bloom, the entire star-shaped fortress is transformed into a pink island of cherry blossoms — a spectacular sight most dramatically appreciated from above.

The Goryokaku Tower, standing 107 meters beside the fort, offers a bird's-eye view of the star-shaped cherry blossom formation — a view that is genuinely thrilling. At night, the cherry blossoms are illuminated, creating a romantic evening scene reflected in the moat waters.

Best Season

Typically late April to early May — similar timing to Matsumae, but Goryokaku often blooms slightly later. The contrast between the cherry blossoms and the clear Hakodate sky on sunny days in late April is spectacular.

Access

From Hakodate City Electric Tramway "Goryokaku-koen-mae" stop, about 10 minutes on foot. Or from JR "Hakodate Station," about 15 minutes by taxi.

Maruyama Park (Sapporo City)

The most convenient cherry blossom spot for visitors staying in Sapporo, Maruyama Park is a beloved local hanami (flower viewing) destination where Sapporo residents gather each spring. About 130 somei yoshino trees spread their branches throughout the park, and during cherry blossom season the park becomes a pleasant, relaxed picnic spot.

Adjacent to Maruyama Park is Hokkaido Jingu (Hokkaido Shrine) — one of Hokkaido's most important shrines. The tree-lined approach to the shrine is also beautiful during cherry blossom season, with the blossoms framing the approach path. After viewing the cherry blossoms, visiting the shrine and then strolling through the park makes for a perfect half-day itinerary.

Travel Tips for Hokkaido Cherry Blossom Season

Timing: Hokkaido's cherry blossom season arrives about one month later than Tokyo — late April to early May is the main window. Northern areas of Hokkaido (like Asahikawa or Abashiri) bloom even later, sometimes into mid-May.

Weather: Even during late April and early May, Hokkaido can have cold, wet days. Bring layers including a warm jacket, and be prepared for variable weather when planning outdoor hanami picnics.

Crowds: Matsumae Park and Goryokaku are extremely popular during peak bloom and can be crowded, especially on weekends during Golden Week. Weekday visits and early morning arrivals are recommended for a quieter experience.

Local Food: Hokkaido's spring food scene includes fresh Hokkaido seafood (especially Hokkaido scallops and sea urchin), Hokkaido dairy products (fresh milk, soft ice cream, rich butter), and "Hokkaido soup curry" — a spring warming specialty.
