Himeji Castle and Arima Onsen โ€” World Heritage Castle and Famous Hot Spring

Two of Hyogo Prefecture's greatest attractions sit at opposite ends of the prefecture but complement each other perfectly: Himeji Castle, the most magnificent surviving feudal castle in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Arima Onsen, the oldest hot spring resort in the country and a place of extraordinary historical and sensory richness. Together they make an ideal Hyogo two-day itinerary.

Highlights

Himeji Castle โ€” nicknamed Shirasagi-jo (White Heron Castle) for its gleaming white plastered exterior โ€” rises above the city of Himeji on a low hill, its complex of 83 buildings connected by winding corridors and gates designed to confuse attacking armies. Unlike almost all other Japanese castles, Himeji has survived wars, fires, earthquakes, and even WWII bombing raids with its original 17th-century fabric largely intact. A recent decade-long restoration has returned the keep to its original brilliant white. The view from the top floor sweeps across the city to the Harima Sea beyond.

The approach along Otemae-dori, with the castle floating above the rooftops at the end of a long, straight boulevard, is one of Japan's great processional streetscapes. Cherry blossom season transforms this approach into a scene of extraordinary beauty. The Kokoen garden adjacent to the castle moat provides a refined traditional garden experience to complete the visit.

Arima Onsen, nestled in a narrow mountain valley north of Kobe, is famous for two types of mineral springs: the golden-coloured kin-no-yu (iron-rich water) and the colourless gin-no-yu (radioactive radium water). Both have distinct therapeutic properties and appear in records dating to the 7th century. The compact old town, with its steep lanes, traditional ryokan, and souvenir shops selling the famous Arima sanbai basket weave, is deeply charming.

Getting There & Tips

Himeji is 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen. Arima is accessible from Shin-Kobe by cable car and bus (about 30 minutes). Combine both in two days: Himeji one day, Arima the next. Book Arima ryokan well in advance.

Best Time to Visit

Himeji castle cherry blossoms (late Marchโ€“early April) are among Japan's finest. Arima is pleasant year-round; winter snowfall in the mountain valley is magical.
