Kanazawa City One Day Model Course

This plan links the highlights of Kanazawa, the former castle town of the Kaga domain, into one easy day on foot and by bus. It balances a garden, castle ruins, old streets, a market, and modern art. It is a classic route that even first time visitors can follow without getting lost.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Kenrokuen Visit one of the three great gardens of Japan in the quiet hour just after opening. Take your time at the stone lantern and Kasumigaike pond and enjoy the seasonal scenery. 10:15 Kanazawa Castle Park Cross the bridge from Kenrokuen to reach the castle park. View the reconstructed turrets, the long storehouse, and the imposing Ishikawamon gate. 11:30 Lunch at Omicho Market Head to Omicho, known as the kitchen of Kanazawa. Enjoy a fresh seafood bowl or snack on sweet shrimp and crab eaten on the spot. 13:30 Stroll the Higashi Chaya District Walk the beautiful streets lined with lattice doors. Sample gold leaf soft serve and browse machiya cafes and craft shops at a relaxed pace. 15:30 21st Century Museum of Art Finish at the round glass museum. Enjoy hands on works such as the Swimming Pool installation to round out the day.

Highlights

Kenrokuen changes its face with each season, and the winter rope supports for the pines are a famous Kanazawa sight. The Higashi Chaya District keeps a strong Edo era atmosphere, and gold leaf crafts make popular souvenirs. Some special exhibitions at the museum need reservations, so check in advance.

Access and Tips

From the east exit of Kanazawa Station, the loop sightseeing bus moves you efficiently between the main spots. Many sights cluster within walking distance of Kenrokuen, so comfortable shoes help. The market and chaya district get crowded around midday, so allow extra time.

A Quick Tip

A one day bus pass makes getting around easier. Ending the trip by viewing the lit up Tsuzumi Gate at Kanazawa Station in the evening is also a fine choice.
