Course Route

9:30 Start at Miyako Station Gather information around the station first. You can reach Jodogahama by local bus or taxi. Miyako, also the terminus of the Sanriku Railway, makes a fine base for a rail journey.

10:00 Arrive at Jodogahama The beach lined with white rhyolite rocks is beautiful enough to recall paradise, just as its name suggests, and it is designated a national place of scenic beauty. Take in the whole view from the observation point first.

10:30 A sea walk by sightseeing boat Board the sightseeing boat to view Jodogahama from the water. Sheer rocks and the glowing Blue Cave (Hachinohe-ana) reveal scenery you cannot see from land. The Blue Cave can also be entered by small sappa boat. Operation varies with the season and sea conditions, so checking in advance gives peace of mind.

12:00 Lunch with seafood Enjoy a fresh seafood bowl, or the famous sea urchin and abalone dishes, unique to a port town.

• How this route works: A half-day to full-day course starting at Miyako Station and taking in Jodogahama Beach and the port town. You will get around mainly by local bus, taxi and on foot; if you plan to take a boat, allow for the time on board as well.
• Getting to Jodogahama: About 20 minutes by bus from Miyako Station, right by the "Oku-Jodogahama" bus stop. By car it is about 10 minutes, and it is about a 15-minute walk from the No. 1 to No. 3 parking lots to the beach.
• Parking: No. 1 parking lot has 109 spaces (7 for buses and 2 for disabled visitors), No. 2 has 128 spaces and No. 3 has 118 spaces. From April to October, only permitted vehicles, taxis and large buses may drive along the road from the No. 1 parking lot to Oku-Jodogahama. At night (18:00-8:00) the road is closed to vehicles all year round (visitors who have difficulty walking can apply to the attendant at the far end of the No. 1 parking lot and be issued a pass).
• Sappa-bune boats (the only boats that reach the Blue Cave, Hachinohe-ana): Reception is at the Jodogahama Marine House. The fare is 1,500 yen per person, the ride takes about 20 minutes, and no advance reservation is required. The Marine House is open 8:30-17:00 and operates from March to November (closed in winter).
• The sightseeing boat "Miyako Umineko-maru": It departs from two points, Dezaki Pier and Jodogahama (the jetty), and tours the geosites of the Sanriku Geopark with a guide. It runs from 9:00 to 17:00 with a capacity of 80 passengers. From July 17 to August 31 it sails every day; from September it does not run on Tuesdays; from November to January 9 the 6th and 7th sailings are suspended; and in winter a special timetable applies. Individual visitors cannot book and simply board on the day, while groups of 15 or more must reserve at least one week in advance.
• Other facilities: The Odaiba Observatory is about a 5-minute walk from the Jodogahama Marine House (a 7-minute walk from the No. 1 parking lot) and gives a sweeping view over Jodogahama. The Jodogahama Visitor Center offers information on the nature of the Sanriku Coast and on walking routes. For a meal, the Jodogahama Rest House is convenient.
• Gathering information at the station: The general tourist information office in front of Miyako Station is open 9:00-18:00 (closed on New Year's Day). As well as picking up a walking map, you can rent an electric bicycle there.
