From the Airport to the City: Narita, Haneda & Kansai Access

Once you clear customs, your next decision is how to reach the city. Each major airport has a few well-signposted options — here is how to choose.

Tokyo: Narita Airport (NRT)

Narita is farther from central Tokyo, so allow time. Main options:

• Train — Fast limited-express services and other train lines connect Narita to central Tokyo. Frequent and reliable.
• Airport limousine bus — Convenient if your hotel is a stop, as you avoid changing trains with luggage.

Tokyo: Haneda Airport (HND)

Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo and generally the quicker arrival point.

• Train and monorail links reach the city centre in a relatively short time.
• Buses and taxis are also available; buses serve many hotel areas directly.

Osaka/Kyoto: Kansai Airport (KIX)

Kansai International serves Osaka, Kyoto and the wider Kansai region.

• Trains connect KIX to Osaka and on to Kyoto, including limited-express services.
• Limousine buses run to major hotels and city hubs.

How to choose

• Lots of luggage or a group? A direct limousine bus to your hotel area is easiest.
• Travelling light and want speed? The train is usually fastest and most frequent.
• Late arrival or several people? A taxi may be worth it despite the higher cost.

• Buy or top up an IC card at the airport so you can tap straight through the gates.
• If you have a rail pass, check whether it can be activated at the airport station.
