Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine

Tucked into the mountains of Takamori in Aso District, Kumamoto, Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine is a mystical power spot known mostly to those in the know. Along its approach through a dense grove of cedars, about a hundred moss covered stone lanterns stand in neat rows on either side, creating a hushed atmosphere that feels like a gateway to another world. The shrine is thought to have been founded between the late Kamakura and Muromachi periods, born from the union of ancient rock worship and the Kumano faith brought by mountain ascetics.

Access and Basic Information

Signs stand along National Route 265. - By bus: From Takamori Chuo bus stop, take the town community bus and get off at Kamishikimi Kumanoza Jinja Iriguchi, about fifteen minutes. - Reaching Ugeto Rock requires climbing a further mountain path from the main hall, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
