Kikuchi Gorge
Spreading through the mountains of Kikuchi, Kumamoto, Kikuchi Gorge is a beautiful valley at the source of the Kikuchi River, the largest river in the north of the prefecture. Set in the northwest of the outer rim of Aso at an elevation of roughly five hundred to eight hundred meters, a varied clear stream dotted with falls, rapids, and pools of all sizes is framed by a dense broadleaf forest. For its clear air and chilly currents it is called a natural cooler, and it is cherished as a soothing power spot full of negative ions.

Enjoying the Seasons
In spring young leaves bud and fresh green colors the gorge. Summer is popular as a place to escape the heat, with cool, refreshing air by the stream. In winter, frost flowers sometimes bloom across the whole range, wrapping it in crisp silence.
Access and Basic Information
- Location: Hara, Kikuchi, Kumamoto - By car: A little under an hour from Kumamoto Airport and a little over an hour from Kumamoto Station, about seventeen kilometers east of the Kikuchi town center. - Footpaths are maintained within the gorge. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. - Parking is available.
A Quick Tip
Even in summer the waterside is chilly, so an extra layer is reassuring. Some parts of the footpath are wet and slippery, so watch your step and savor nature slowly.
