Suizenji Jojuen Garden in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, is a distinguished daimyo garden built by the Higo Hosokawa family in the Edo period. Centered on a pond fed by clear spring water and arranged with features such as a mound modeled on Mount Fuji, this beautiful strolling garden is said to express the scenery of the Fifty Three Stations of the Tokaido, and is a leading garden of Kumamoto. Affectionately known as Suizenji Park, it is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site.

History of Suizenji Jojuen Garden

Suizenji Jojuen Garden began when the Hosokawa family of the Higo Kumamoto domain established a teahouse here, and large scale garden making was carried out through the Kanbun era in the late 17th century, with continued development shaping it into its present form. The name Jojuen derives from a passage in a poem by the Chinese poet Tao Yuanming. Making use of abundant water welling up as Aso subsurface flow, the garden was beloved by successive domain lords.

The Pond, the Mound, and Izumi Shrine

At the heart of the garden spreads a pond holding fresh underground water that wells up steadily. Around it, gently sloping grass covered mounds and green pines are beautifully arranged, with the mound likened to Mount Fuji especially striking. You can enjoy the charm unique to a strolling garden, in which the scenery shifts with every step. Within the grounds stands Izumi Shrine, founded in 1878, enshrining successive heads of the Hosokawa family, and many visitors come to worship. At the Noh theater in the grounds, traditional performing arts such as torchlight Noh are sometimes held in spring and autumn.

Access and Basic Information

The location is Suizenji Koen, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Admission is 500 yen for ages 16 and above and 200 yen for ages 6 to 15, with opening hours from 8:30 to 17:00 and last admission at 16:30. Access is about a 6 minute walk from the Suizenji Koen stop on the Kumamoto city tram. From JR Hohi Line Suizenji Station it is about a 13 minute walk. It can also be reached by tram from Kumamoto Station, making it a convenient base for city sightseeing.

Practical Travel Notes

The grounds form a strolling path with some ups and downs, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Allow about 30 minutes to an hour for a stroll alone. In and around the grounds are sweet shops and tea houses where you can rest while enjoying the specialty dango. Souvenir shops dot the surroundings, perfect for a stop after your walk. It is beautiful through all four seasons, and a summer stroll cooled by the spring water is also pleasant.

The seasons of fresh greenery and autumn foliage, and spring when the cherry blossoms bloom, are especially beautiful, showing different faces through the year.
