Ukishima Shrine

Standing in Kashima, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto, Ukishima Shrine is formally called Ukishima Kumano Imasu Shrine and is fondly known to locals as Ukishima san. Because its hall appears to float like a dragon palace in the middle of a pond brimming with clear spring water, it took this name. The enshrined deities are Izanagi and Izanami, the married pair said to have held the first wedding in Japan. As gods of love and safe childbirth, they have made the shrine a symbol of the town.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Idera, Kashima, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto - By car: About seven minutes from the Mifune interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. Free parking is available. - It is easy to reach by car from central Kumamoto City, and touring nearby spring spots after your visit is recommended.
