Sankyozawa Fudoson, a Sacred Waterfall Training Site Near Central Sendai
Sankyozawa Fudoson
Tucked quietly into a ravine along the Hirose River close to central Sendai stands this Fudo hall. Wrapped in greenery so deep you would not believe it is within the city, a waterfall about 20 meters tall falls in two stages behind the hall. It is a little-known hidden power spot where you can leave the bustle behind and touch the energy of nature.
Since ancient times it has been said to grant blessings against floods, droughts, and epidemics, and a stone statue of Fudo Myoo is set at the foot of the falls. It was once a training ground where ascetics performed waterfall practice in this very cascade. A stone monument showing it was already a place of faith in the early Edo period remains, conveying a long history.
