Sendai City Aoba Castle, Jozenji Dori and Gyutan Gourmet Stroll

Known as the City of Trees, Sendai blends leafy streets with the lasting presence of the warlord Date Masamune. Views over the town from a hilltop castle, a pleasant walk beneath rows of zelkova trees, and a hearty plate of grilled beef tongue await. Here is a one day stroll that first time visitors can enjoy without getting lost.

9:00 Start at Sendai Station Begin at Sendai Station, the gateway served by the bullet train. Pass through the free passage that links the east and west sides, then head toward Aoba Castle while taking in the mood of the town. The Loople Sendai loop bus makes it easy to reach the main sights.

9:30 Aoba Castle Ruins (Sendai Castle) Visit the castle ruins on the small hill of Aobayama. Although the main keep no longer stands, stone walls and a restored side turret evoke the past. The mounted statue of Date Masamune is a symbol of Sendai, and the view over the city and the Pacific from here is superb.

11:00 Osaki Hachimangu Shrine This shrine was founded by Masamune, and its lavish hall is designated a national treasure. The black and gold Momoyama style decoration is well worth a look. Pause here to wish for a safe journey.

12:30 Lunch of Gyutan Sendai means gyutan, or grilled beef tongue. A set meal of thickly grilled tongue served with barley rice and oxtail soup is a treat unique to this city. Fine restaurants are scattered around town, so seeking out a favorite is part of the fun.

14:30 Jozenji Dori Head to Jozenji Dori, a symbol of Sendai lined with zelkova trees alongside Aoba Dori. The central promenade is dotted with bronze sculptures, and you can stroll slowly under dappled light. Famous for its winter illuminations, the street is also lovely in fresh green and autumn color.

16:00 Shopping on Ichibancho Arcade Look for Sendai souvenirs in the covered shopping arcade. Zunda mochi, sasa kamaboko fish cakes, and local sake all make a fitting end to the trip.

The castle ruins involve a continuous slope, so the bus is a safe choice if you are not confident about walking. The light on Jozenji Dori is especially beautiful in the late afternoon, so aim for the hours around sunset for photos.
