Zao Okama Crater Lake and Togatta Onsen Course

The Zao mountains rising on the border of Miyagi and Yamagata are a highland area known for stunning scenery through the seasons. Chief among the sights is Okama, the emerald green crater lake that represents Zao. At the foot flows Togatta Onsen, said to have been discovered more than four hundred years ago, letting you enjoy grand nature and a fine hot spring at once. Course Route

9:00 Start at Shiroishizao Station Begin at Shiroishizao Station on the bullet train line. From here head toward Zao by car or bus. Buses toward Okama run seasonally and mainly on weekends and holidays, so on weekdays it is more reliable to take a bus to Togatta Onsen and transfer to a taxi or car. Climb the mountain while enjoying the scenery that changes as the elevation rises.

10:30 Zao Echo Line Drive the Zao Echo Line, a mountain road linking Miyagi and Yamagata. Beyond the winding road spread mountainsides that change their look with the seasons. The fresh green and autumn color periods are especially beautiful, tempting you to stop at the lookouts along the way. This road is closed in winter, usually from early November until the following spring, so if Okama is your aim, a visit from spring to autumn is the rule.

11:30 Okama Crater Lake Reach Okama, the crater lake that is the highlight of Zao. The water held in the mortar shaped crater shines emerald green depending on the light. The color of this mysterious lake shifts with the weather, and its contrast with the rugged surrounding slopes is striking.

12:30 Stroll near the Zao Summit Take a light stroll near the summit of Mount Katta. From the lookout you can see Okama and, on some days, all the way to the distant Pacific. Savor the crisp air found only at high elevation.

14:00 Descend to Togatta Onsen Come down the mountain to Togatta Onsen at the foot. From Shiroishizao Station to Togatta Onsen is about 50 minutes by bus as a guide. Soak slowly in a public bath and ease the fatigue of the walk. The plain and warm mood of the hot spring town is another charm of this place.

15:30 The Onsen Town and Kokeshi Togatta is also a home of traditional kokeshi dolls. Peek into workshops and souvenir shops to meet the simple, endearing dolls. Relaxing at a foot bath is also recommended.

Highlights

The mysterious color of Okama is the greatest highlight of all. Because it changes with the weather and the hour, the same view never appears twice. The panorama from the Zao Echo Line should not be missed either, and the whole mountain can be called a single scenic spot. Togatta Onsen at the foot is a welcome place to enjoy mountain and bath as a set.

Practical Travel Notes

• Best season and time: Okama fogs over easily, so the morning, when clear skies are more likely, is the time to aim for. Fresh green in early summer and autumn color from late September to October make the mountainsides vivid too.
• Avoiding the crowds: Weekends in the autumn color season bring congestion on the Echo Line and crowded parking. An early morning start is the trick to enjoying it in comfort.
• Time needed: The Okama lookout and the stroll near the Katta summit together take about an hour, and bathing and strolling at Togatta Onsen take about one to two hours.
• Fees to expect: If driving to Okama, a toll road or parking fee near the summit may apply. Public baths at Togatta Onsen run about a few hundred yen each (check the latest information on the official sites).

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Assumptions for this course: About 7 hours in total (leaving Shiroishi-Zao Station at 9:00 and finishing around 16:00) / a car is essential if you want to reach Okama. Route buses run seasonally, mainly on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
• Open season: The Zao Echo Line and Zao Highline are closed for the winter every year from early November to late April, and during this time you cannot reach Okama. Most recently they closed for the winter at 17:00 on November 4, 2025 and opened at 11:00 on April 24, 2026 (from the Sainokawara gate to the Yamagata prefectural border)
• Zao Highline operating hours: 7:30-17:00. There are overnight closures from 16:00 to 8:00 the following morning just after the Echo Line opens (late April to just after Golden Week) and from mid-October until the closing date in early November
• Budget guide: The Zao Highline (2.5 km from Katta Pass to the summit) costs 600 yen for ordinary cars, 450 yen for motorcycles (125cc and over), 1,500 yen for microbuses and route buses, and 2,400 yen for large vehicles (revised April 1, 2025). Vehicles of 125cc or less, bicycles and pedestrians may not use it
• Access: About 1 hour by car from the Murata IC or Shiroishi IC on the Tohoku Expressway
• Parking: About 350 free spaces at the end of the Zao Highline (the summit). There is the prefectural Zao Sancho Rest House, and it is a 2-3 minute walk along a barrier-free path to the observation deck looking down on Okama
• Points to note: At the 1,750 m summit the temperature is far lower than on the plains, so you need something to put on even in summer. Okama disappears from view when fog rolls in, so the morning, with its higher chance of clear skies, is your best bet. Mount Zao is an active volcano, and access can be restricted when a crater-area warning is issued, so check the Japan Meteorological Agency's eruption warning level as well
