9:30 Start at Matsushimakaigan Station Begin at Matsushimakaigan Station on the Senseki Line. It is a short walk from the station to the shore. Head to the boat pier while taking in the scent of the sea.10:00 Cruise of Matsushima Bay First, set off on a sightseeing boat among the islands. Oddly shaped isles such as Nioujima and Kaneshima, carved over long ages by waves and wind, appear one after another. The wide panorama from the deck is a sight truly worthy of the name three great views of Japan.
11:30 Godaido Cross a vermilion bridge to reach Godaido, standing on a small islet that juts into the sea. Beloved as a symbol of Matsushima, the hall is reached by a slatted bridge that offers a glimpse of the water below for a touch of thrill. It is said to have been rebuilt by Date Masamune.
12:30 Lunch of Seafood Enjoy dishes made with oysters, conger eel, and local fish caught in Matsushima Bay. Winter oysters are a specialty in particular, and you can try them grilled or fried in many ways.
14:00 Zuiganji Visit Zuiganji, a Zen temple tied to the Date clan. Passing through the avenue of cedars on the approach, you are met by a grand main hall. The interior, adorned with gold leaf and carvings, is a must see and conveys the splendor of Date culture.
15:30 Entsuin Entsuin, next to Zuiganji, is a quiet temple known for its beautiful garden. Mossy grounds and seasonal flowers soothe the heart.
16:30 Stroll on Fukuurabashi Cross the long vermilion Fukuura Bridge to Fukuura Island. A natural walking path circles the island, letting you enjoy views of Matsushima across the water.
