The trees coloring as if to bury the mountainside from about 350 to 850 meters elevation form a gradation that deepens as the elevation rises through Shimosenbon, Nakasenbon, Kamisenbon, and Okusenbon, and their overwhelming expanse takes your breath away. Best Season / Recommended Time of Day The viewing season is typically late October to mid-November. Coloring begins in the high-elevation Okusenbon and descends in order to Nakasenbon and Shimosenbon. Even within the same Mt. Yoshino, there's a gap of 1–2 weeks depending on location, so it's recommended to check the coloring information on the local tourism association's site before visiting.

The time of day to especially aim for is early morning, the 7–8 o'clock hour, when morning mist drifts among the mountains. Soft morning light illuminates the trees through the mist, and an otherworldly, fantastical landscape spreads out. With few tourists, this is also the only time you can set up a tripod and immerse yourself in photography. Since crowds increase during the day, a wise strategy is to climb up to the Kamisenbon/Okusenbon area in the morning and turn back before it gets crowded.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy / Hidden Tips The "thousand trees at a glance" viewing spot from Yoshimizu Shrine is well known, but what the locals secretly love is the view around Nyoirin-ji Temple. Access

After getting off at "Yoshino Station" on the Kintetsu Yoshino Line, you can access the Shimosenbon area by ropeway (about 3 minutes) or on foot (about 15 minutes). From Osaka-Abenobashi Station it's about 1 hour 20 minutes by express, and from Kintetsu Nara Station about 1 hour 30 minutes including transfers is the guideline.

On weekends during autumn foliage season, road congestion and ropeway waits are guaranteed. A visit by private car is strongly discouraged. The best plan is to use public transportation and arrive on an early-morning service. If you walk to Okusenbon, secure 3–4 hours round trip and plan with breaks included along the way. Easy-to-walk sneakers or trekking shoes are essential on your feet. Since the mountain path becomes slippery with fallen leaves, pay attention to the grip of your soles too.

Tanzan Shrine

Tanzan Shrine is known as the "god of love," but when November arrives, its expression transforms completely. The sight of about 3,000 maples covering the precincts blazing up all at once, with crimson, green, and gold blending as one to envelop the entire grounds, is — beautiful beyond words. Above all, the view from the front, where Japan's only wooden thirteen-story pagoda overlaps with deep-red maples, leaves an endless stream of locals declaring it "Nara's finest autumn foliage." Best Season / Recommended Time of Day The viewing season is typically early to late November. Since the maples in the precincts color somewhat late, visiting here when the autumn foliage of Mt. Yoshino and Muro-ji is nearly over is the choice of "those in the know." Incorporating it at the end of your trip as the conclusion of Nara's autumn foliage season is also a stylish plan.

Recommended is the 8:30 hour right after the gates open. The moment of "transmitted light," when the morning light slanting in shines golden through the leaves of the trees, is a special beauty you can never taste in the afternoon. Aim for the best shot of the thirteen-story pagoda and autumn leaves during this time, when the entire precincts are still quiet.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy / Hidden Tips The Tanzan hiking course (about 2 hours on foot) continuing from Sakurai Station to the shrine is a hidden route beloved by local hikers. The experience of feeling, with your whole body, the untouched, natural autumn foliage while walking the mountain path along the mountain stream is something you absolutely cannot get by visiting only by bus. The clear air, the sound of stepping on fallen leaves, the voice of the babbling brook — receive Nara's autumn with all five senses.

Around the shrine there are also teahouses renovated from old folk houses, and taking a break with warm amazake or persimmon-based sweets after a mountain walk is a uniquely local way to enjoy it. Also, the area around the "Kemari Mound" in the precincts has few tourists and is a little-known photo point where you can capture the thirteen-story pagoda from an angle different from usual. Map in hand, do walk slowly around the precincts.

Access

From the south exit of Kintetsu/JR "Sakurai Station," take the Nara Kotsu Bus bound for "Tanzan Shrine" for about 25 minutes and get off at the last stop, a short walk away. Buses run approximately once an hour. No official announcement of additional services during the foliage season has been made, so be sure to check the day's timetable before heading out.

By private car, note that Lot 5 costs 500 yen normally but rises to 1,000 yen in November. Lot 1, open only from 1 November to 7 December, charges 500 yen for cars (300 yen for motorcycles, 2,000 yen for buses) — making it the cheaper option in November. No free shuttle bus from a temporary parking lot has been officially announced. If using the hiking course, plan a route of about 2 hours starting from Sakurai Station, and come equipped suitably for mountain walking.

Muro-ji

Differing from both the grandeur of Mt. Yoshino and the splendor of Tanzan Shrine — Muro-ji's autumn foliage has that kind of "quiet depth." This temple, long gathering faith under the name "Nyonin Koya (Koya for Women)," sits quietly tucked away in the deep mountain valley of Muro, far from Nara City. With every step up the moss-covered stone stairs, you sense the noise of daily life receding. And the combination of the vermilion-lacquered five-story pagoda and blazing autumn foliage that appears beyond the stone steps makes even the word "beautiful" feel trite. Each time you visit, your chest grows hot with "ah, I'm so glad I came here" — Muro-ji is that kind of place. Compared to Mt. Yoshino and Tanzan Shrine, fewer people visit, so it's a hidden famous spot we wholeheartedly want those who wish to savor their own private Nara autumn to visit.

Best Season / Recommended Time of Day The viewing season is mid-November to early December, according to the Uda City Tourism Association. Since the precincts are surrounded by densely growing trees, how the light enters changes greatly by time of day. On a clear day, morning to around noon has the best light, the time when the contrast of the five-story pagoda and autumn leaves stands out.

Also, one thing we'd love you to try once is a visit on the morning after rain has stopped. Fallen leaves cling to the stone pavement, and the entire moist, wet precincts shine like a mirror — a time awaits where the word "yugen (subtle profundity)" itself becomes the scenery. Bring an umbrella and aim for the morning after the weather has slightly broken. You're sure to encounter a beauty beyond your expectations.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy / Hidden Tips Extend your trip to the Okunoin at the top of the steep stone steps deep in the precincts, and another world wrapped in the stillness of the deep mountains awaits. Surprisingly few tourists make it this far, so you can savor the luxurious time of having the colored trees practically all to yourself. The harder it is physically, the greater the sense of accomplishment and the beauty of the scenery.

Around Muro-ji, Muro Ryuketsu Shrine and the old road "Nyonin Koya-michi" also continue, making it enjoyable as a small journey tracing the history of faith. At a local diner near the approach entrance, rustic set meals using Muro-produced ingredients are popular. The warmth of not being overly touristified is a charm found only here. After your meal, stroll slowly along the Muro River, and the lingering afterglow of the trip continues forever.

Access

After getting off at "Murouguchi-Ono Station" on the Kintetsu Osaka Line, take the Nara Kotsu Bus for about 15 minutes, get off at the "Muro-ji" bus stop, and walk about 5 minutes. From Kintetsu Nara Station it's about 1 hour including transfers, and from Osaka-Uehommachi Station about 1 hour 10 minutes is the guideline.

Since buses are somewhat infrequent (about 1–2 per hour), we strongly recommend checking the timetable in advance before making your visit plan. Missing the return bus means waiting quite a while for the next one, so be mindful to keep a schedule with time to spare. The precincts have many stone steps, so be especially careful with your footing if heading to the Okunoin. Well-broken-in trekking shoes are the best preparation for enjoying this temple to the fullest.

Viewing Season and Ways to Enjoy

Nara's autumn foliage season is long, early October to late November, and if you combine spots well, new discoveries and emotions await no matter how many times you visit. Starting from the high-elevation Okusenbon of Mt. Yoshino and heading south to Muro-ji and Tanzan Shrine is a golden plan that lets you fully savor Nara's varied autumn while chasing the foliage front. Tour leisurely over two days and one night, and you can touch the "essence of Nara's autumn" that you can never encounter at a hurried pace.

Tips for Travelers

• 🍁 Crowd Measures: Both Mt. Yoshino and Tanzan Shrine get very crowded on weekends at peak autumn foliage. Aiming for a weekday early morning is best, but if that's difficult, "slightly shifted dates" just before or after the peak are also a big hidden gem. The beginning of coloring and the season of fallen leaves each have their own different beauty.
• 👟 What to Bring: Every spot has stone steps and mountain paths. Heels are forbidden. Choose easy-to-walk sneakers or trekking shoes, and be conscious of grippy soles to prepare for slipping on wet cobblestones and fallen leaves.
• 🧥 Clothing: Mountainous areas are 3–5°C colder than flatlands. Especially early morning and evening chill sharply, so a layered style you can put on and take off is the basic. At Muro-ji and the Okusenbon of Mt. Yoshino, there are days when a down jacket is needed even at the end of October.
• 📷 Photography Tips: Just being conscious of the direction of light — going for west-facing compositions in the morning and east-facing ones in the afternoon — dramatically raises photo quality. Also, if you're going for the "transmitted light" of autumn leaves, early morning, capturing the trees somewhat backlit, is recommended. Even with a smartphone, just setting exposure compensation slightly to the minus makes colors appear vivid.
• 🚌 Transportation: When touring three spots over 1–2 nights, a rental car is most efficient, but be prepared for considerable congestion during autumn foliage season. For public-transportation users, making use of the Kintetsu free pass is recommended. Since there are types suited to each area, check the official site before departing for the pass that fits your itinerary.

Autumn in the ancient capital of Nara welcomes you with a new expression each time you visit. The mountains of Yoshino veiled in morning mist, the crimson maples dyeing the thirteen-story pagoda, the five-story pagoda shining beyond the mossy stone steps — each has a "real beauty" there that photos can't fully convey. This autumn, do come to meet Nara's autumn foliage.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Yoshinoyama: Autumn 2026 Coincides with a "Special Exhibition Opening"

Let me be upfront about something first. There is no official information giving peak foliage dates by area — such as "mid-November for Shimosenbon, mid-October for Okusenbon" — for Yoshinoyama. All that the Yoshinoyama Tourism Association publishes is a real-time colour-change bulletin. The area-specific dates circulating online have no traceable source, so make your decision based on the bulletin just before you go.

In place of that, there is one piece of confirmed information that will affect your timing.

Kinpusenji Zaodo (main hall) normally operates visitor hours of 8:30–16:00, with admission of ¥800 for adults, ¥600 for junior and senior high school students, and ¥400 for primary school children. However, from 24 October to 30 November 2026 a "Special Opening of the Secret Principal Image" will be held, during which admission doubles to ¥1,600 for adults, ¥1,200 for junior and senior high school students, and ¥800 for primary school children. This period overlaps completely with the foliage season, so please factor it into your budget. On the other hand, this is a year when you can view the normally hidden blue Zaogongen statues at the same time as the autumn colours.

Autumn illuminations were held in 2025 from 24 October to 30 November, lights on at 16:30 and off at 22:00. However, as only one year's worth of primary-source confirmation was possible, it cannot be stated that this "happens every year." Please wait for the official announcement regarding 2026.

Getting to Yoshinoyama: Different Rules from Cherry Blossom Season

Many people associate Yoshinoyama with a "private vehicle ban," but there is no such ban during the foliage season. That restriction applies during the cherry blossom season.

What does exist in autumn is a downward one-way traffic restriction. In 2025 this ran from 24 October to 30 November, covering the section between the tourist car parks and Katte Shrine, on weekdays from 10:00–16:00 and on weekends and public holidays from 9:00–16:00. Mopeds up to 125 cc are permitted.

Yoshino Omine Cable Car (ropeway) is not suspended. However, it operates on selected days only: ropeway service on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays; replacement bus service on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Fares are ¥500 one way / ¥900 round trip; journey time approximately 3 minutes; 4 departures per hour. The replacement bus accepts cash payment on board only, so have change ready. Buses to Okusenbon-guchi run on weekends only.

Tanzan Shrine: Car Park Doubles in Price During November

Tanzan Shrine also does not officially announce typical peak dates. However, the period of the foliage festival is known: in 2025 it ran from 1 October to 7 December.

Visitor admission is 8:30–16:00, last admission 16:30. Standard admission is ¥700 for adults and ¥300 for children. Some websites quote "¥600," but this is the fee for the night-time viewing period, not the daytime rate.

Evening visits — "Koyo Hi/Oto (Foliage, Light and Sound)" — were held in 2025 from 14 November to 7 December, daily from 17:00–20:30 (last entry 20:00, interior of buildings until 19:30), at ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for children. As no primary-source information prior to 2024 was available for this event either, please check the official announcement each year to confirm whether it will be held.

One thing to watch carefully is the car park fee variation.

Even within the same shrine's car parks, No. 1 is half the price of No. 5 in November. Tourist buses must make advance reservations at least 3 days ahead on weekends and public holidays in November and from 14 November to 6 December.

Muroji Temple: The Five-Storey Pagoda and Kondo Are Under Renovation in Autumn 2026

This is the most important piece of information in this article.

The nationally designated treasure five-storey pagoda is closed to visitors from 17 August 2026 until March 2027, and the Kondo (golden hall) from 5 October 2026 until March 2028, due to roof-rethaching works. The combination of the five-storey pagoda and autumn foliage is Muroji's signature image, but that signature is under scaffolding in autumn 2026. The night illuminations also cannot extend beyond the point of the five-storey pagoda.

If you visit in full knowledge of this, here is the practical information:

• Peak: mid-November to early December (Uda City Tourism Association)
• Visiting hours: 8:30–17:00 (9:00–16:00 from 1 December to 31 March)
• Entrance fee: adults ¥600, children ¥400; Treasury (Homotsuden) is an additional ¥400
• Night illuminations: held for 4 consecutive years from 2023 to 2026. In 2026: 9 evenings on 7, 8, 14, 15, 21–23, 28, and 29 November, 17:00–20:00 (last entry 19:30), adults ¥600, children ¥400

As the illuminations have been held for four consecutive years, planning on the basis of "weekend evenings in mid to late November each year" will not lead you far wrong.

The stone steps to the inner sanctuary (Oku-no-in) are described as "over 370 steps" on the Nara Prefecture official website. The "700 steps" commonly seen online could not be verified.
