Deer as Divine Messengers

Nara Park's deer are wild animals revered as sacred messengers of Kasuga Taisha. Protected as divine deer since the Nara period, they are special beings that have coexisted with humans for over 1,000 years. Designated a National Natural Monument as the Deer of Nara, more than 1,000 roam the park area, with a 2021 survey counting about 1,100.

Shika Senbei (Deer Crackers)

Shika senbei deer crackers are simple crackers made from wheat flour and rice bran. Deer gather when they see tourists holding crackers. The deer's bow, lowering their head before receiving crackers, is a particularly popular photography subject. A bundle of ten crackers costs about 200 yen, and part of the proceeds supports deer protection.

Nara Park and World Heritage Scenery

Nara Park is a vast park where World Heritage temples and shrines such as Todaiji, Kofukuji, and Kasuga Taisha are scattered. Deer resting on the lawn with the majestic Great Buddha Hall, vermilion shrine halls, and a five-story pagoda in the background create scenery unique to Nara.

Practical Travel Notes

The park covers about 502 hectares, has no walls or gates, requires no admission, and can be strolled 24 hours a day year-round. From Kintetsu Nara Station it is about a 5 to 15 minute walk east, and from JR Nara Station about 15 to 30 minutes. The traditional deer antler cutting, continuing since the Edo period, is held on weekends and holidays in early October. Remember the deer are wild animals: keep other food, plastic bags, and paper out of sight to avoid accidental ingestion, keep a respectful distance from rutting males in autumn and mothers in early summer, and carry all trash home.

Best Time and Tips

Deer can be seen year-round, but spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage make the scenery especially beautiful, and early summer (around June) is popular for fawns. Enjoy interacting with the deer while following the rules, and combine your visit with a historical walk to Todaiji and Kasuga Taisha.
